Anyone familiar with Dublin airport?

Our two flight options are 10am and 7pm. The 10am would mean a gruesomely early start but would hanging around from around 1pm to 7 be even worse?

Option c- do we have time to be dropped in Dublin around 1 and get back to the airport for the 7pm flight?

The bus to the city center is straight outside the doors at Dublin airport, blue bus Costs about £8 and takes 30mins. Taxi is about 20mins. Plenty of time, and regular buses to the airport. Very easy city to travel about in

Exactly what the person above said!

SnowyGiveAway · 20/03/2023 20:42

Yes you do. I've often killed 4 hours in Dublin in between a flight and a ferry. It's a cheap and easy bus or slightly less cheap but even quicker taxi

Brilliant, thank you. A little trip to Brown Thomas awaits Grin

I'm not sure I'd risk it.

Dublin airport is massive so you could have a bit of a trek to your gate.

I've been on the airport 'express' bus a few times and it seems to crawl through traffic for ages.

I'd get the early flight and sleep on the plane tbh.

OneCup · 20/03/2023 22:04

I'm surprised at the first two comments. I have always found the bus to be very slow and unreliable. But perhaps I was unlucky.
No idea about taxis I'll admit.

Lightningrain · 20/03/2023 22:08

The only thing I remember is the airport being huge and a massive trek to the gate. I was travelling with an elderly relative and we only just made it on time.

OnTheBoardwalk · 20/03/2023 22:15

Uber to Christchurch is approx €65 return but can take up to an hour each way.

if you’ve not been to Dublin before and won’t be going again I would recommend going into the city. Plan your time and there’s a lot to see in a couple of hours

uber can use the bus lanes and you can always use the tunnel if worried about traffic on the way back

do you have to check out and back in again though?

OnTheBoardwalk · 20/03/2023 22:18

oh and as PP said Dublin airport is huge, especially if you’re using budget airlines like Ryan air that take the furthest and cheapest gates available

FirstFallopians · 20/03/2023 22:23

Also shocked at the comments on the reliability and speed of the buses.

It could often take me 45 mins to an hour getting from Westmoreland Street (near enough Brown Thomas) to Santry (a suburb on the north side) in rush hour traffic on the bus. The airport is at least another 30 mins on the same route at that time. Many’s a time I sat beside a panicky tourist who had taken the timetable at face value.

I wouldn’t risk it to be honest.

Hairgician · 20/03/2023 22:28

I wouldnt do it myself. Id be too stressed about being late and i concur with the massiveness of the airport. Ryanair use the gates furthest away. Fking trek alright. Then sprint finish to make it on time as we totally misjudged how long it took to get to gate.

TowerStork · 20/03/2023 22:46

If OP is dropped into the city at 1pm, why wouldn't there be time to drop into a shop and get the bus to the airport?

The Aircoach.ie 700 picks up from Stephen's Green and goes through the port tunnel in 30 mins. If OP leaves the Green at 10 to five the bus will arrive at T1 by half five.

TowerStork · 20/03/2023 22:47

It's the regular city buses that are unreliable.

Good for window shopping but the exchange rate makes the prices crazy 😣

BarbaraofSeville · 21/03/2023 04:31

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought the OP was flying in and out of the airport and was asking about a return trip to the city from the airport, not starting in the city at 1 pm.

That sounds like an option for a couple of hours but for a 7 pm flight I'd be looking to get on the Aircoach at 3.30/4 at the latest.

emmathedilemma · 21/03/2023 07:16

If you get the bus then note that there’s two terminals so check which one your flight leaves from! I used to use the airport bus all the time to get flights around 7pm. I’d leave the office about 4:30 and whilst traffic can be busy getting out of the city I was never rushed at the airport.
