Becoming an Appointee for PIP

Has anyone any experience of this? My husband had a series of major strokes 10 weeks ago, followed by a further brain bleed 4 weeks ago. We need to claim PIP.

Husband is unable to speak properly, has been left with extensive visual loss and many other issues that mean he cannot complete the forms himself. I have therefore been advised to become his appointee. The assessment is tomorrow.

Has anyone gone through this and can tell me what to expect tomorrow? Thanks in advance.

Cab have good advice on how to fill in forms on their website. Even if you don’t have to fill in the form it’s worth looking at the questions on there and noting down some answers as that is want you will be asked about. our assessor was nice but darted around the form so assume they all do that.

I did this for ds who is 16. For the appointee thing I just explained to ds what pip was and asked him whether he wanted to be responsible for sorting it out or carry on as we are like we did with dla. He wanted me to do it so we both signed the short form from DWP saying we both wanted for me to be his appointee and Sent it off. A couple of weeks later we got a letter back saying it had been approved.

I then had to fill in the long forms for PIP and send it off. A few weeks after that someone phoned out of the blue to do a telephone assessment. That bit was difficult as I didn't have the time I wanted to think about every question. The assessor did try and trip me up a few times. E.g. She asked if d s could go to the cinema with friends and without someone supervising. I said no. Next question was asking if he gets lost when going out to the cinema with friends. A few more questions followed where she tried to get me to say that he went out to the cinema with friends and I kept repeating that he didn't. He got the PIP award in the end. Hope it goes ok for your husband's assessment.

If his assessment is tomorrow you must have already arranged to be his appointee and filled the forms?

PurplePineapple1 · 20/03/2023 13:36

The visit/assessment tomorrow is for me to become his appointee. He already got a small amount of PIP for an existing health condition. I called to update and ask for a further assessment after his strokes, explaining that he couldn't speak etc. They then arranged this appointment for me to become his appointee.

When my disabled DD turned 16 (12 years ago so might have changed) the DWP sent a representative to confirm that I could be her appointee to receive (continue to receive after childhood) her DLA/PIP. The guy came in, had a cup of tea, talked about various things including how he was going to his mum's for tea (he reminded me of the Ronnie Corbet character Timothy in Sorry!). DD, who had just got home from school, was fast asleep in her wheelchair. The guy ticked the box saying he confirmed I was appointed and off he went!

They are basically just coming to check that your DH is happy to have you deal with his benefits because he's not able to manage it himself. And to assess if they think you are the right person to do that for him. DWP appointment is not the same as Power of Attorney or Deputyship.

Citizens Advice bureau can help with this,

Thanks bigbluebus that's reassuring to hear.
