Workmen have turned up at DDs rented flat and said she can't be there while they work

They were booked but they have asked them to leave

She had no idea she couldn't be in the flat

She was planning on coming and going like normal

But no, they have an alternate flat they can use for the day and they can't come back in

Surely this isn't right, especially With no notice

I think if the landlord had told her in advance and apologised for the inconvenience it would have been ok. Presumably the workman are fixing something or improving the flat. Is it just for the day?
Turning up with no notice and expecting her to leave is unacceptable.

KatyMac · 20/03/2023 08:43

She had notice that the work would be done but not that she had to leave the house

She has meetings and appointments in and out the house all day and wasn't expecing to upsticks and leave first thing with everything she needs

What kind of work are they doing, why can't she be in the flat? I can't imagine that it would be ideal for working at home anyway with workmen knocking about with all the associated noise and disruption that they bring.

LadyHaHaHeeHaw · 20/03/2023 08:48

They can suggest it may be better to be out all day but they can't insist
I've had complete house renovations done several times and never once been told to leave
She needs to ring the LL

KatyMac · 20/03/2023 08:50

Well it wasn't ideal but neither is packing up and leaving at no notice
Its more taking everything for the day now

and leaving people she doesnt know in her home by themselves

The landlord is insisting

What kind of work are they doing?

If she's had no notice and it's not practical today then say no.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/03/2023 08:51

The landlord can insist, but your DD doesn’t have to comply. What works are these that require her to be out of the property all day?

SirChenjins · 20/03/2023 08:52

I second calling the LL - I’ve had many trades in over the years for both small and large jobs including building works every time I’ve just carried on as normal. Never had to leave the house for the day/s - that seems very odd. What work is she getting done that they think she needs to be out for?

Mentalpiece · 20/03/2023 08:53

Unless it's work that's potentially detrimental to her health, then yes she can.

KatyMac · 20/03/2023 09:00

I think they just want the annoying youngsters out

But it messes up their plans - even if there is a penthouse flat with Wifi and a kettle to use

Her flatmate works on a desktop (in headphones) so upstairs won't work easily

She is worried saying no will mean they get given notice

toomuchlaundry · 20/03/2023 09:04

What work is being done?

KatyMac · 20/03/2023 09:08

From the sound of it (drilling a hole between kitchen and bathroom) it's for ventilation - which is a good thing imo

I think they have calmed down - but it's unsettled them both & to be fair it would piss the life out of me - put on the spot required to take all I need for the day out with me? I gently pack the day before over a few hours

They need to contact the landlord and say that without notice (and good reason) for them to leave the flat for the day then they aren't able.

Her flatmate working from home on a desktop is one good reason to give should the landlord ask why

Zodfa · 20/03/2023 09:55

The flat does not need to be empty so they can drill a hole! Maybe if they were completely rebuilding the floor in the hallway or something.

Justmeandthedog1 · 20/03/2023 10:23

Can they lock their bedrooms?
It’s unacceptable ( and in my book bullying) to try to kick paying tenants from their home for the day.

KatyMac · 20/03/2023 10:32

If it had been I the letter they would have made plans - its being put on the spot

More info now: It's fire insulation for all the walls - so important

Just badly managed
