Developmental delay

I was just reading this and noticed that a low thyroid level in childhood can cause developmental delay.

If a child at 12 tested to have a low thyroid level and the GP kept refusing to test again or test why at 15 a girl wasn't having periods is this normal?

Later with a new GP 150g of Levothyroxine was required and there are many other issues.

Could this have caused developmental delays as I am not alone in thinking this now young adult is not as mature or able as they should be?

My daughter was 12 and had thyroid problems, she ended up on tablets. The consultant she saw said it can be pubity that can affect the thyroid. Luckily she was on them for a few years. No problems now and she has been to uni.

Oh and her periods were normal.

Did they wait until she was an adult to do blood tests and start drugs?

When she was 12 they started tablets, 3 years later clear. She did get tested again 2 year's ago when she was 23. Thyroid was fine when she got the results.

Thank you.

So I am gathering from this that it's standard to test bloods and give medication to children for an autistic immune low thyroid issues.

I assume then tbe delays may be due to medical neglect?

It's not just her periods.

I am coming to terms with this now as I had no idea I was being fobbed off and they were inducing illness.

Autoimmune

I find it hard to believe that a thyroid can cause development mental issues .

It's usually genetic or brain damage .

My son has sn and I've never heard of anything like this but interestingly I have autoimmune thyroid disease .. 🤔

She is very young for her age and has lots of issues with time for example. I am now wondering if her not having access to thyroid medication earlier has been an issue.

@boboshmobo It’s well recognised that, left untreated, an underactive thyroid can cause developmental delays.

ElectronicDevice · 20/03/2023 15:09

So what do I do know about my daughter and about the negligent GP?

Well that is interesting but is it fixed when they fix the thyroid ?

Do they catch up of their thyroid if corrected ? Presumably the delay isn't that great

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 21/03/2023 19:55

I’m not an expert, but I don’t think it’s reversible.

ElectronicDevice · 21/03/2023 20:13

Like puberty blockers?

What do I do for her?
