Tell me what is wrong with me (thirst!)

I am awful at drinking enough, I can go a day without thinking to drink because I don't get thirsty. When I do get a drink it's because I've thought oh I should drink something, not because I've felt thirsty. My pee is always dark and my kidneys are probably fucked!

Though often I wake at 2/3am super thirsty and I can down a couple of pints of water, maybe a couple of times a week? Never in the day time!

Why am I like this?!

I don't know, but you need to drink sips of water throughout the day. You need to put reminders on to drink tea, water, juice..... Anything.

Tey harder to get into the habit of drinking water.

Pints of water, occasionally, will run through you.

I dont know. My DD is like this, but she has autism and her introception is faulty which is a sensory thing.

Acrylicpainter · 19/03/2023 21:26

I'm very very rarely thirsty but I drink milk because I like the taste, you need to set a reminder on your phone to drink something. Dark wee isn't good.

seriouslygettingold · 19/03/2023 21:28

My DD is like this and wouldn't drink if we didn't remind her to. She has ASD and has the same issue with good, she doesn't get hungry at all.

JusDroppedInToSeeWhatConditionMyConditionWasIn · 19/03/2023 21:33

With my DD I try all sorts to remind her to drink.

I send reminders on her phone during the school day to say drink!

I leave sports bottles with drinks in around the house.

I put straws in her drink because for some reason she drinks more through a straw.

I buy drinks she likes even if they aren't the healthiest like squash, hot chocolate and diet coke, because it's better than nothing.

If she says she feels unwell I say have you had a drink today, because often she's actually thirsty but doesn't know it.

When she was younger she had repeated uti possibly not helped by drinking enough, so after this I made a real effort to get her to drink more.

Diabetes makes me much thirstier during the night. Maybe get tested by the dr. x

Minimummonday · 19/03/2023 21:35

I don’t drink much at all. But when I start I can’t stop. So I often don’t start!

dickdarstardlymuttley · 19/03/2023 21:36

I always thought how much you need to drink is governed by how active you are, the weather and your physiology. I read somewhere that drinking 3 litres of water a day was a clever marketing ploy.

Diabetes

NotRishi · 19/03/2023 21:39

I have a 7 week old and was tested for gestational diabetes at 28 weeks and that was negative. I've had blood work done twice since too not looking for diabetes but general blood work to check for infections and that didn't flag anything up either. This lack of thirst has gone on a lot longer too, I'm talking as long as I can remember! So I don't think it's diabetes. I do always try and get better and I'll have good weeks then I fall off again..

Diabetes would make you thirsty through the day, not just at night time.

It's probably habit. I was brought up not to drink much (it would "ruin our appetite for meals", I wanted to avoid the disgusting outdoor school toilets that were full of rats etc!) and I still have to remind myself to drink. I often start to feel thirsty in the late afternoon then remember that I haven't had anything to drink except my breakfast coffee.

Try to get into the habit of putting a glass of water, or sugar free squash, out with every meal. That will at least make sure you drink at set times, and then you can try to add sips inbetween meals as well.

mrsbyers · 19/03/2023 21:52

Feeling thirsty means you are already dehydrated and drinking a lot of water quickly will just further flush electrolytes making it worse you need to drink steadily throughout the day and not only when thirsty

ShellsOnTheBeach · 19/03/2023 21:56

Drink a glass of water or a cup of tea first thing every morning.
Drink 1 glass with every meal.
Always have bottle of water with you.
If you still forget, set alarms to go off every 3-4 hours during the day.

I like to drink diluted zero sugar vitamin water, which is more interesting than plain water.
I also have a dozen or so different kinds of herbal teas in my cupboard for a bit of variety.

Witchytwitchybitchy · 19/03/2023 22:22

I hear what you say about diabetes, but waking up desperate for a drink was one of my main symptoms- for a couple of weeks before diagnosis.I was also weeing continuously every couple of mins.

@mrsbyers does this explain how when I do sometimes feel thirsty and drink I then get rabidly thirsty and can’t stop?

TheFlis12345 · 19/03/2023 22:27

You can get bands you put around a water bottle that beep at you if you haven’t drunk from it for a set amount of minutes, they might work for you?

TheodoreMortlock · 19/03/2023 23:15

Poor interoception. It's heavily associated with autism but not exclusive to autism. This is a really good explainer

caringcarer · 20/03/2023 00:05

You should be drinking more water. Just get into habit of drinking water first thing when you wake up, then at 3 hour intervals. Set alarm on your phone. Your kidneys will thank you.
