Toddler Has Smelly Saliva

Hi. Just wondering if anyone has had anything similar or can offer advice. My almost 2 year old still hasn’t got all his teeth and his pillow stinks where he slobbers when he sleeps. I’m not sure whether it’s down to teething but he has stinky breath usually more so when he wakes. We brush his teeth twice a day and I make sure I do it aswell to make sure it’s done properly. I am constantly washing his pillow and pillow slips as they stink. I’m not sure what to do or if I should take him the docs? Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Would diabetes be a consideration - I don't know. People say that makes your breath smell of pear drops? I think it's worth a GP appointment.

If it is only recent/short term he may be getting ill and you can smell it on his breath.

Does he sleep with his mouth open? Have a stuffed up nose?

Bridgingthefeckingmassivegap · 19/03/2023 21:15

The blood from teething can make their drool stinky, but if their breath is also stinky in the morning then it's usually a sign of infection for my DD, it's the first sign I know she's Ill or about to be.

If he’s sleeping with his mouth open (hence smelly dribble) that needs assessment and most likely referral to an ENT.

I expect he is sleeping with his month open. It does make a difference.

It’s not really a pear drip smell it’s more like a fishy smell. Gross. It’s been going on a while so don’t think it’s down to illness as he is fine in himself. I’m not sure if he sleeps open mouthed but he is always snotty pretty much

My 4 year old is the same. He's on the waiting list for adenoid removal though as they are giving him sleep apnoea and making him snore so I think they're linked

IsItMeOrEveryoneElse · 19/03/2023 21:27

If hes snotty then he is probably breathing thru his mouth rather than his nose and this will cause bad breath

Natzyc · 19/03/2023 21:29

Ahh so is that normal then? I’ve only really noticed it in the winter months where he seems to get one cold after another

Well, yes but get it checked out as there maybe something that can help with the blocked nose

AHelpfulHand · 19/03/2023 21:55

My son had this and an ENT diagnosed reflux. He was put on omeprazole for 6 months

Natzyc · 19/03/2023 22:01

Ok thanks for the replies I will ring the docs on Tuesday

We had this and ended up having to wash sheets every one to two days but it just improved one day coincided with the pillow and duvet being added

elevenplusdilemma · 19/03/2023 23:38

DS had this. He had tonsil / adenoid issues. The problem stopped when they were removed. He also had reflux.
