Not a journo, just practising for some grad scheme tests and I've not done anything! Have you?

@TheHouseNextDoor well done! I bet you had loads of judgment when you had your baby young.

And look at you now!

What are you working as?

useitorlose · 20/03/2023 10:32

Bought my first property at 22
Relocated overseas for work aged 50 and now work for the government in the country I moved to
Studying for a PhD which I should finish by age 60!

Not taken a penny off my parents since I left home. Peers have been given cars, house deposits and even houses

I have a work-life balance whilst also maintaining a good career and income (long may it continue!).

Many of my peers earn more and are much further ahead in their careers, but I don’t envy the hours they put in, away from their families.

Not all of us 50+ felt the need to drink to fit in with the ladette thing, or fit in with anything. Well done on your sobriety, Viva, but please don't generalise.

I am not generalising, I answered the question put to me. I spoke of my own and my own peer group experience, as requested in the OP.

Have I hit a nerve?

Won a national sporting title (ladies). I gave up competition because of the cost and the time commitment. This was a niche discipline but lovely to know I reached that level.

I semi retired at 53. I'm the only one of my friends who has done this. I work about 20 hours a week but for myself.

In my peer group people expect that by my age (60) work is winding down. I can’t afford to do that and will have to work full time until 67. I get the sympathetic head tilt. See also in response to still having a mortgage at our age. BiL said “you should be ashamed of yourselves”.
