Things to bring back from US + fabric/yarn

I've read a fair few old threads on here about what to bring back from a trip to the States. I know the exchange rate is a shocker and lots available here now but still looking for any recent suggestions. I'm particularly interested in fabric and yarn store recommendations, fabric has been mentioned on a couple of threads but no detail.

I'm already going to get:

Melatonin
Rhinocort
Hydrocortisone cream
Grape flavoured cough syrup

M&Ms
Coffee creamer
Cinnamon grahams from Trader Joe's
Mint baking chips

Hanes undies

I know about nyquil but can't take it with my job so not really a priority. Converse I wish I could wear but they shred my feet. Bath and Body Works will be visited.

So, any other suggestions?

Big bottles of ibuprofen and paracetamol (acetaminophen)
Teeth whitening strips

Joanns for fabric and crafty stuff

headingtosun · 19/03/2023 14:55

Where are you traveling to?

Shunkleisshiny · 19/03/2023 15:02

Visit the Marshalls, Ross and Burlington stores, they are similar to TK Maxx with some great bargains. My friend bought a gorgeous DKNY handbag for 8 dollars at a Ross store!

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks all.

@MashedUpPotatoes is it craft fabric or do they do dressmaking fabric too?

Dressmaking too! They have some lovely stuff.

Okay with lots of driving I would be looking for small specialty quilt shops, possibly Amish if you are driving through a relevant area.

I'd get something delivered to your hotel from US Ebay, it's got some really lovely fabrics and yarns if you have a US delivery address (even a temporary one) just watch the delivery times. I think they have a craft store called Michael's that is a bit like Hobbycraft as well.

Also I'd grab dramamine from a pharmacy but I'm very prone to travel sickness/seasickness/hyperemesis gravidarum and fluticasone fuororate (avamys) spray for my allergies.

DevantMaJardin · 19/03/2023 17:04

I'd also get those Crystal Light sachets from Wal-Mart or another supermarket because they're like powder that flavours your water and they come in some really yummy flavours.
Ahhh I miss shopping in America.

Motorcycleemptyness · 19/03/2023 18:25

shopping in the USA used to be a dream!!! But nowhere near as good as it used to be due to internet shopping BUT I always stock up on toothpaste with hydrogen peroxide (5%) which you can’t get in the UK. I find this very effective for whitening my teeth!

Can’t think of stuff you can buy offhand but in Philly you pay far less sales tax on clothes than you do in NYC.

Not that you’d go there by choice, but in Delaware where one of my best friends lives, it’s 0 sales tax on everything.

Old Navy, Banana Republic is what I’d look at plus Sephora if you like that (think there’s one in UK now). I’d go to Walgreens and Target.

Giant tubs of ibuprofen / paracetamol/ ranitidine
Emergen-C vitamins
Big bags of dried chillies
My kids love the cheddar popcorn

We don't really shop much there anymore or at least not with the idea of getting a bargain (we visit family a lot). It's expensive / on par with here even for the us brands eg Nike.

Florissant · 19/03/2023 18:58

Real maple syrup.

Curtainsbysewandsew · 19/03/2023 19:24

If you are in Trader Joes look at their seasonings:

everything but the bagel
umami spice
ranch seasoning (great in potato salad)

Their dark chocolate peanut butter cups are good too. As are the peanut butter stuffed pretzels.

If you have access to a freezer while you are there - get a pack of “hold the cones” mini ice cream cones dipped in chocolate. Although you don’t actually need a freezer as they are so delicious and tiny it’s possible to eat an entire package of 8 in one sitting.

Joanne Fabrics is a great full service dressmaking fabric, craft/quilting fabric and notions chain.

There's a place called Textile Fabrics in Nashville, an independent fabric shop.

Also Fabric Row in Philly www.visitphilly.com/things-to-do/attractions/fabric-row/
If nothing else, it looks like a quaint and interesting neighbourhood.

Curtainsbysewandsew · 19/03/2023 19:32

Fabric? How about Mood if you are in NYC? They have a website. Might be nice just to browse rather than buy? I’ve found fabric to be much cheaper in the U.K.

christmaspudding43 · 20/03/2023 07:53

Brilliant, thanks so much all. I spent ages on the Joann site, there was some lovely stuff and I imagine it'll only be better in real life!

If anyone else thinks of anything please shout.
