Is this cheeky?

I bought a jumper from M&S a couple of weeks ago, it's still within its return period, but it's now on sale £15 cheaper than I paid for it.

Do you think I can ask to return it and then buy it again at the cheaper price? Will they allow that?!

It's unworn, still with tags. I was tossing up whether to keep it or not.

They don't have any of that size left online otherwise I'd just return the one I have and buy a new one, but I can ask to return and then immediately but back the same one?

Yeah do it. It's on sale anyway, I'd do it. You aren't breaking any rules.

Buy the other one first though.

Yes I did this. Sort of by accident. I went to return a tip & she told me it had gone into the sale so I decided it was such a bargain I should rebuy it!

That's the problem, there isn't another one in this size. I'd have to specifically ask them to refund me and then sell it me again at £15 cheaper. It seems a bit cheeky, but also mad to pay £15 more for a jumper than it's now selling for.

Go into a store, and if there is one, buy it.

I think it would be really cheeky to return something and then ask them directly if you can buy the same one back again. You bought it fair and square, and if everyone tried to do this every time shops reduced anything, it would be a logistical nightmare.

Look on the back of the receipt for the rules. When I worked in John Lewis our policy was you had 28 days to claim back the difference if something went down in price.

It actually is a bit cheeky, taking one back and buying a different one is not cheeky asking to immediately have the same one at a lower price is pushing it imo

Yes that is cheeky, why should they do that for you?

A small independent shop? Cheeky. M&s? Go for it! Just be upfront and laugh about it. Just say I'm going to be really cheeky here, I've seen this is on offer can I return it and buy it back? Just laugh it off. Noone who works in m&s is going to judge you for that.

They might be only reduced in the sizes that didn't sell, so you might not get it back for the lower price.

So surprised people saying it's cheeky 😆 the owner of m&s isn't going to serve you OP. Noone will care as long as you kind of laugh it off.

I think it is really cheeky if there isn't one out in the store.

Yes that is cheeky, why should they do that for you?

Because it would be easier than me returning it, them having to put it back on the shelf, for someone else to buy for the reduced price? Surely, it's removing a stage for them?

That's fair. I'm not going to cause a scene if they say no, but seems like it's worth asking?

Cringe.

Ordinarily, I’d say just do it - but this specific scenario is rather different. I don’t think I’d have the nerve. Could you get a friend to come along immediately afterwards and snap it up on your behalf?Grin

I'm back! And the result was.....

I asked.
The very nice lady at the counter said 'no, we don't do buy back'.
I said 'ok, that's a shame, thanks anyway'.
She then pushed it back across the counter and whispered 'go and pay for it at another till (wink)'
I did and now I have my jumper, £15 and a big respect for Brenda in ladieswear.

I don't think she was judging me and she certainly didn't make me feel stupid/like a CF for just asking the question, so all round a good result.

Thanks for all the opinions!

Particularly the one about John Lewis having a policy on honouring sale prices. I think if one high street shop does this then it can't be massively, unreasonably cheeky to ask another high street store if they have a similar policy. In the case of M&S they don't and that's fine, but worth asking I think.

My SIL bought a sofa and got £300 back when it went into the sale (JL, though it’s part of their T&C) I’ve always found Marks to be very nice. Personally, I’d ask. If you can’t bear the cringe factor or worry they might say no if you start off by asking about their sale policy, I’d return it, get your mate to come with you then pop up and ask separately if they happen to have it in X size. Or go back in ten minutes later and say you’ve changed your mind, and need it back pronto. It’ll be fishy as fuck but what can they say 😂 I wouldn’t feel guilty, M&S are not shy about putting their prices up.
