*please don’t open if squeamish* is this gangrene?
HarriwithanI · 19/03/2023 10:54
I’ll start off by saying I should know better being a HCP but I’m always concious of being a time waster and useless and self diagnosis. It’s very painful but I’ll seek IRL medical attention tomorrow. I’m already meant to be in hospital for an unrelated thing but had no childcare.
Im ashamed of my feet/toes hence why it’s been left this long.
I’ll attach pics, increasingly painful, now gone from red to purple, white at the top. Assumed it was an ingrown toenail but the pain and change has rapidly increased.

It looks like an infection from the photo but you do need to get it seen either way.
TheAustralian · 19/03/2023 11:00
That’s an infected ingrown toenail. They may operate (mine looked exactly the same and the operated) or they may give you antibiotics.
bathe it in salt water till you get it seen too
WinterMusings · 19/03/2023 11:03
Dear God, you're a HCP, surely you know they wouldn't give toss what your feet look like?!?! You've been utterly mad leaving it this long.
whatever else you're meant to be in hospital for tomorrow needs you to be there.
can a neighbour/friend not be asked??? It's a couple of hours.
if not, phone an agency (like sitters) & book half a day.
sorry, no idea if it's gangrene or not, but it needs seeing ASAP.
Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2023 11:08
It’s not gangrene, it’s an infection.
Get it looked at by a medically trained person asap
custardbear · 19/03/2023 11:12
I feel for you my toes used to look like your skin looks (not the nail).
See someone and get them sorted out. I'd also say not gangrene but you need help
FWIW my two ingrown big toes are fine now, but when I feel any discomfort I get to the podiatrist
HarriwithanI · 19/03/2023 11:12
I will bite the bullet and do it. Both this and the other thing (a lot more serious unfortunately) need to be seen too, I’m my worst enemy.
Sounds really silly but due to my past experiences as a patient I’m so scared, but I’m fine as an employee. It’s the thought of it being a stay in a hospital 2 hours away (I’ll need speciality surgery and I’m rural) and it will end up a foster placement for my boys, but I’m pretty much useless how I am at the moment so time to put on my big girl pants. Thanks for listening
LIZS · 19/03/2023 11:13
Minor injuries will look at it for you. Looks an ingrowing toenail.
Shouldbedoing · 19/03/2023 11:16
That toe needs warm (not hot) saltwater soaks (5 minutes morning and night, 1 tsp salt in a tumbler of warm water, pour it into a cereal bowl!) until you can get an antibiotic and you need to see a Podiatrist. Google your local NHS for access
rwalker · 19/03/2023 11:22
My ingrown toenail exactly the same
I’m almost sure this isn’t the correct thing to do or recommend
but for my a lot of painful poking and prodding bit pop loads of pus felt lot better once pressure had gone them salt water soak and germaline
went down side pans lifted corner up that was digging in
greenacrylicpaint · 19/03/2023 11:22
you need to get it seen. you might need antibiotics for that.
but gangrene smells. a really really awful and distinct smell.
HarriwithanI · 19/03/2023 11:32
It stinks I can smell it through the dressings I’ve been doing :( pretty minor compared to everything else but I will get it seen thanks for the advice
Botw1 · 19/03/2023 11:40
No its not gangrene
It's a fungal infection.
You need to get it seen ASAP
ChiefPearlClutcher · 19/03/2023 11:40
Gangrene is like a greeny-black and the smell Is something else.
Streamside · 19/03/2023 11:52
My children have had huge issues with ingrowing toe nails and everything was done through day surgery so I wouldn't stress over your children. You need antibiotics asap. It's in your best interests to get this sorted out quickly, my oldest son had real issues with his and a gp who would remove small parts of it at at a time. His toe became very sensitive to all the anaesthetic injections and that caused him more bother than the actual nail in the end.

Are you sure you’re a HCP?
You’re welcome for me to PM you my ID 😂 typically my area doesn’t deal with feet in all honesty.
Im sure a plumber wouldn’t know much about electrics for instance.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/03/2023 14:41
Soak it in salt water for 15 mins and pat dry. Cover with TCP or Savlon. See GP forget thing tomorrow morning. Soak again before bed. If you feel ill or temperature then go to urgent care .
HarriwithanI · 19/03/2023 18:40
@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor thank you very much, I’ve done that & will again tonight.
I remember you from my cadua Equina post and you we’re really helpful, thank you
