Back issues and the gym

Id like to join a gym. For many reasons, weightloss/ tone, for something to do when dcs at school and just get fitter
There's one about 3 miles away. So not far. Its a good price. As cant afford a PT or anything so just basics.
. However 18m ago i had a herniated disk and have had issues off and on since then.

Will the gym make it worse? Or help?

If it will help or at least not cause more damage.
What's the basics i need to know / do/need to take. Anything other than a towel/ drink ( id drive home to shower)

I’d get proper medical advice, but I have a bad back and have found that strengthening my back and core have helped.

I had a herniated disc which in turn caused sciatica so even though it’s nearly twenty years ago I still have to be careful what I do or the sciatica flares up. I had advice from my orthopaedic consultant and physio at the time and I’d recommend you also get solid medical advice for your own situation before starting exercise.

Generally speaking, like the pp said, strengthening your core is key so Pilates will
be good; be careful of yoga as this sets my sciatica off something terrible plus some of the bendy poses could put stress on your spine etc.

If there is a swimming pool then gentle swimming and aqua aerobics will be good. Cycling is weight-bearing and should be fine too, but do seek proper advice.

Thank you. I. Will seek advice.
Id mainly do cross trainer, treadmill and bikes. Not weights at 1st.
