Any drummers around?

DS(9) wants to learn to play the drums. We're extremely lucky in that our town has a music school where he can get lessons. But he'll need to practice at home too. For the sake of the neighbours, and my sanity, would these be suitable?

Not specifically a drummer, but I’m a music teacher. We have these in our classrooms to get pupils started.
They are a good way to have something at home to practice on without spending a fortune, just for them to potentially decide down the line they don’t enjoy it!

Are they just for kids or do adults use them too, do you know? It's a lot of money to spend if they're not suitable in a couple of years time.

Yes some adults use them but they aren't a drum kit. They can be used at home and occasionally gigged assuming you have the amplification. See what's available on eBay?

Yes, go for it! He can play them with headphones in or you could get a small speaker to plug them into. He could go a long way with these, and you - and your neighbours - won't suffer!

I got a nearly identical kit - same brand - and it has been fine. You will be impressed when you hear the sound quality.

I had acoustic drums as a teen and the noise in a normal-sized house was too much, even for me!

That’s the kit my son started on, it was great when we lived in a semi detached house, you still get the tapping but nowhere near as loud as his current drum kit!! (Detached house now!!)
We sold ours on when he upgraded to another electric kit.
His band has just released their first EP, so it was a good start 😁

That's the (potential) problem: that kit says it's designed for children, but if he really takes to it he'll end up having to upgrade to an adult set, be it electronic or otherwise.
My son started on an adult electronic set (which he still has, along with two acoustic sets!) and it was fine. He's in two bands now.
DD started last year age 12 with a fusion size acoustic set. It's very loud. 😞

Gear4Music is a good place to buy from, btw!

This is all very helpful, thank you. Is there a set any of you would recommend for longevity? I don't think it'll be a passing fad. He's autistic and obsessed with music. He's been playing saxophone and piano for 3 years and begs me after every lesson to do drums too. I have to drag him out of music school after his other lessons as they let him play with their drums. I've been putting it off to avoid the noise, the saxophone practice is loud enough.

DS would have been about that age when he started.
He's on these:

Yamaha and Roland are big hitters (See what I did?). Ebay maybe your friend. The alesis is well priced and they make a good product.

RoseLavenderBlue · 18/03/2023 19:40

My DS (9) has drum lessons at school. We bought him the Alesis Turbo Mesh for his birthday last year as recommended by @CatOnTheChair above. Though we bought the set, then everything else separately (headphones, amp, and headphones as presents from family members) but that is a good price for a bundle. I think its great! Drum teacher recommended Roland as a second hand buy, as they have good resale value. But we decided to buy new and this had good reviews.
