Dandruff is making me really depressed. Help?

Hello. I have shoulder length hair and last year out of nowhere I’ve developed dandruff. I’m nearly 40 and it’s honestly affecting my confidence so much.

I don’t understand where it came from, and I can’t seem to shift it. I’ve tried washing my hair daily, washing once a week. makes no difference really, daily was slightly better but I have an insanely time poor life and can’t manage it before work every day. I’ve tried Head and shoulders, T-gel, body shop ginger. I use a head scrubber thing recommended on here. I have tried only conditioning, double shampooing. Nothing is helping and I feel a bit desperate. it’s so embarrassing.

Any help appreciated.

Try using apple cider vinegar with mother diluted in shampoo and left on.yoyr head a little while whilst you massage it all in. Wash hair after and condition as usual. This is the only thing that cured mine.

Nizoral has always worked here. I first got it on prescription years ago but you don’t need that these days.

Leave it on for a few minutes and after a few days you’ll see a massive improvement.

I would try changing your diet, eating oily fish & drinking lots of water.

Random tip- those sticky lint rollers are good for getting rid of the visible flakes

I second the recommendation for Nizoral, it’s amazing.

WyldeSwan · 18/03/2023 12:55

Is it definitely 'just' dandruff? I developed awful dandruff out if nowhere - turned out to be scalp psoriasis. It's a bugger to get under control.

Spottybluepyjamas · 18/03/2023 12:57

Head and shoulders doesn't have the active ingredient needed for actual dandruff.

You need Nizoral, which you can buy over the counter at the pharmacy. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes every few days and you'll be sorted in a week or so. Good luck!

NillyNoMates · 18/03/2023 12:59

Try baby cradle cap shampoo.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 18/03/2023 13:18

Nizoral! It's a game changer you need to try it. The larger size (which is still quite little) is kept behind the pharmacy counter x

BigHeartyTruffle · 18/03/2023 13:19

The only thing that’s ever worked for me is Vichy Dercos shampoo

Sunshineandrainbow · 18/03/2023 13:27

I love polytar shampoo. The smell grows on you!

HTruffle · 18/03/2023 13:53

I also highly recommend Vosene.

Another vote for nizarol, nothing else worked and this works a dream.
Once I'd used this a few times I switched to Apple cider shampoo/conditioner and the dandruff has stayed away.

hairymuffet · 18/03/2023 17:50

Nizoral

Changingmynameyetagain · 18/03/2023 18:02

I use nizoral too, it’s an anti fungal shampoo, also taking a biotin supplement helps.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 18/03/2023 18:04

It’s been a month so see your dr.

ShiningAsAlways · 18/03/2023 18:05

I also use nizoral. I buy it on Amazon, it's really good. Once the dandruffs under control after a few washes, I keep using it every so often but not every wash. If I stop using it the dandruff comes back.

I had tried h&s, tgel and ginger shampoo too with no luck!

AgnesX · 18/03/2023 18:13

It's very hit and miss. Somethings that people swear by make my head itch like crazy. I strongly suspect it's stress related and detergent on the bedding (Ariel) doesn't help. Currently the H&S in the blue bottle for dry scalps mostly helps.

Another one recommending Nizoral, it really does work

JusDroppedInToSeeWhatConditionMyConditionWasIn · 18/03/2023 19:02

I would go to the GP as well. I have steroid lotion from GP when my scalp flairs up.
GP diagnosed psoriasis eventually.

Nizoral doesn't work for me. Treatment really depends on what's causing the dandruff.

TheMatriarchy · 18/03/2023 19:52

My son has issues with this and the only thing that has worked (tried everything else mentioned) is Head & Shoulders Clinical. Its a different product from the supermarket one, you can buy it on amazon and there are 3 versions, they all work.

YouveGotRedOnYou1 · 18/03/2023 20:01

Yes, Nizoral is great. Try that (it has specific instructions on how/when to use) and might as well pop to the pharmacist too for any additional advice.

CheshireCats · 18/03/2023 20:03

Nisoral didn't work for me either.

Weaselstoatferret · 18/03/2023 20:48

Give the inkey list salicylic acid scalp tonic a go. Really helped my psoriasis incase it's not just dandruff.

icelollycraving · 18/03/2023 20:58

I have had issues with it for years. At the moment I find Dream Lengths shampoo and conditioner keeps it at bay. It isn’t designed for it but hydrates my scalp just enough.
