Norovirus in 4 year old - joy

Towcat15 · 18/03/2023 04:41

Just venting - Currently up with my 4 year old who’s been sick every ten minutes for the last 3 hours - could set my watch by it.

I thought it was over as he was first ill Thursday morning but over fairly quickly and he’s been fine, playing at home and eating normally the last couple of days and then bam it starts again tonight.

just praying it doesn’t spread to his brother but it’s pretty brutal this one.

You have my sympathies, we all caught it when dd was 7 months. Worst 48 hours of my life. Lots of sugar and dry toast needed!

Username24680 · 18/03/2023 05:10

@Towcat15 Bless him! I hope he’s feeling much better soon 😔 and fingers crossed you all avoid it! My 2 year old picked it up at the start of January and passed it on to me too 😬 so I had DS throwing up and having explosive nappies while I was stuck in the bathroom myself 😩 it was a horrendous few days! DH works offshore and typically it was while he was away so there wasn’t even a spare pair of hands to deal with DS 😬
Im not in a hurry to experience that again 😅

Towcat15 · 18/03/2023 05:12

Yes his dad works away too and these things always happen in the middle of the night and when I’m on my own!

@Towcat15 it’s the was it always goes isn’t it?! DS and I had managed to avoid Covid until last month too and then both tested positive at the same time 😬 typically, it was 3 days into DHs 3 week long trip.
It was hellish! DS was over it in 3/4 days thankfully but I felt horrendous for weeks as I was completely unable to rest 😬

Oh poor you that sounds awful - it’s even worse when you’re ill at the same time.

He‘s just turned to me and said he felt sad that he was poorly and I wasn’t - I assured him that I would likely get it in the next couple of days and that seemed to cheer him up. Which is nice.

@Towcat15 What a little sweetheart to want to share 😅🤣 so kind to mummy! I hope it’s run it’s course soon ❤️

Lots of fluids and dry snacks (and hand washing for you 😅) and hopefully it passes quickly 🤞🏼

Oh the poor little mite, that must be so horrible for him, being sick every 10 minutes will mean that he is probably dehydrated, and vomiting that often may mean that his diaphragm and the muscles around his ribs may be very painful by tomorrow.

I presume that you are encouraging him to have very small sips of water frequently, and have you any Dioralyte that you could encourage him to sip? If not, some flat full sugar lemonade, and (if he likes salt) a little dab of salt on a damp finger might help too, but please don't give him any salt if he is not able to keep any water down.

When he starts to feel hungry, you can encourage him to have more lemonade - or full sugar Cola if that is his "treat drink" - and offer him cut up small amounts of dry toast, spread with a thinnish layer of jam, but obviously no butter yet. Hopefully that will be a good way to get his tummy back to keeping food down, and if he does keep that down, some mashed up banana could be introduced next, or maybe some chicken noodle soup. Obviously introduce the food in small amounts to start off with, and keep anything fatty, or fried, as the last things to introduce.

I hope that he is feeling better very soon, and that neither you or his brother get it. Hopefully your ill son has only been using a particular towel to dry himself with, and that it is kept where neither you or his brother could accidently use it.

If this either does not clear up very soon, or he gets it again in a few days, then he needs to see a doctor. I presume that you have washed any towels, bedding and clothes that he used a few days ago, as you went along, and as soon as he seemed better. 💐

Towcat15 · 18/03/2023 07:24

Thank you so much. Yes thankfully he’s been good at drinking his water, he’s stopped being sick but has soiled himself a couple of times but he’s perkier in himself now.

religiously washing everything he comes into contact with and keeping things as separate as possible.

I actually called out of hours gp in the night because I was so alarmed at the frequency and he was writhing around in pain but they just said if he gets worse go to a and e but he’s definitely better than he was.

quick question about food if I may - so as soon as he was feeling better on Thursday he was asking for his usual food and wanted to have normal dinner (chicken stirfry) with us and yesterday he was the same, asked for some of grandmas cake and ate his peas and lasagne at dinner - he refused to let me give him something plainer.

I know we are supposed to give plain foods after being ill but he’s asking for normal stuff surely he’s well enough to eat it - or would that have made him more poorly last night?I just wonder if you have a bug you’re going to be sick regardless of what you eat or does what you eat effect how poorly you get?

Apologies if not worded well I’ve not slept!

@Towcat15 I’ve only just seen your other posts OP, sorry! How is he feeling now?

With mine, I left out some plain things for him to graze on if he felt like it. Breadsticks and crackers etc. But if he was asking for certain foods then I did give them to him. He was hungry and upset at being offered toast etc so I figured it was better for him to at least eat something than him be feeling hungry.

Towcat15 · 20/03/2023 23:10

So picking up on this he’s just started again what the heck?! Is that normal 3 bouts of severe vomiting nearly 48 hours in between each one? Waiting for out of hours gp to call back but not likely to be for 6 hours. Another long night ahead…

cornflakegeneration · 20/03/2023 23:18

Just to make you feel a tiny bit better that you're not in this situation, my son started vomiting with noro after my waters had broken 4 weeks early. Stayed up with him half the night and ended up with him downstairs on the sofa after he'd obliterated all changes of clean bedding. Every time I moved more amniotic fluid started leaking out.

Then when the baby born to the above broken waters was 2, he got noro at centerparcs. Again, puked on all the sheets, floor, duvet etc and of course you're not at home so had no spare stuff. Had to call security to get some laundry.

What I do remember is how unwell they were with the relentless vomiting. Hope your little one gets better soon and you can both get some sleep x

Sorry I replied with my silly anectdote without reading to the end of the thread....

That does sound unusual op. My son used to go a few days then be sick again, but usually only one big vomit then he was fine. I think just a sensitive tummy. But the continual vomiting sound ms like he needs checking over. No idea why it's happening sorry.

caffelattetogo · 20/03/2023 23:29

Has he had dairy? After norovirus, our DC will puke like mad after dairy-based foods. GP said it was a common irritation of the gut.

Towcat15 · 20/03/2023 23:33

@cornflakegeneration wow that’s a hell of a birth story! And yes really doesn’t help being away from home when these things happen at least we have our home comforts.

15 times he was ill the other night and we are already at 4 times in the last half an hour. He’s desperately trying to sleep but has to keep waking to be ill again.

I was surprised they said to wait for gp to call was expecting them to tell me to take him in but he def needs to be seen even if it is just a really nasty virus

He had milk in his cereal this morning and a small yoghurt after lunch but he’s been running around playing, constantly asking for food (I’ve kept him to dry crackers and toast other than that) so I would have thought if it was a reaction to food it would be more instant?

Back again just need to vent it’s so hard in the middle of the night when on your own dealing with this.

He’s been up again tonight worst yet lots and lots of d and v. Have now run out of towels but he’s passed out asleep. Worry is he’s refused any drinks and now he’s sleeping with no fluids in him.

doc phoned today and wasn’t too concerned as he’s normal during the day.

theyre phoning back in the morning and if he’s not drinking the. I’ll push for them to take him he’s so tiny as it is.

thaegumathteth · 22/03/2023 03:41

I'd definitely want him checked. Is he in any pain?

Towcat15 · 22/03/2023 04:13

He was as in terrible stomach cramps but they’ve stopped now

OP posts:
cornflakegeneration · 22/03/2023 07:26

Sorry to hear this has been going on so long. Definitely push for him to be checked if he's still having both d and v. It might be that he has an infection that he's struggling to clear.

Can he have tiny sips or would he take a syringe with some water/juice?
