Hiring social media manager. Need help with question.

Hello,

I am currently in the process of looking to hire someone to manage my social media marketing. I’ve done a few interviews and it’s something I’ll
go ahead with but there’s a question I haven’t asked any of them and it’s because I’m a little embarrassed and also because I don’t want to appear to not be savvy 🙈 I wonder if anyone can help me answer so I don’t have to ask them.

When I hire someone, how do they manage my accounts? Will I have to give them the passwords and the like or will I have to add them as a friend and then make them an admin. I did this with my daughter as she was helping me but she’s gone to uni now and doesn’t have time. This also doesn’t work on instagram so for example I couldn’t make my daughter an admin to manage my Instagram so I had to give her the passwords. I know about that Facebook manager thingy majig but apart from that I’m not sure how it would work. I sound clueless don’t I. I am a bit but I suppose that’s why I need someone haha (I’m 62 and sometimes this new digital stuff gets past me)

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance all 💐

Hi - I do this for people.

In terms of Facebook I use my own account and have been added as an admin.

For Instagram, you can also schedule posts via your Facebook account, but I've had clients do both (giving me passwords or letting me manage via Facebook)

Finally there are various scheduling tools that people might use (buffer for example) and the accounts are added in there.

Oh thank you for replying!! I didn’t think I would get a reply so soon. I’m always up at this hour these days, I blame the menopause. Thank you so much for answering so do you think they should tell me what they will do or shall I ask some questions? Preferably without sounding like I don’t know what I’m talking about 😓

An easy start to the conversation is to ask how they like to work normally - do they use a scheduler or do they use the native scheduling tools!

I've given passwords to our comms person.

i run a business doing just this.

You are right - for Instagram you will need to share your log in details. There is no way to add an admin.

For Facebook (which can also be used to manage and schedule IG content) you add the social media manager as an admin via business manager and they can manage the page and won’t have any access to your own personal page or need your Facebook password.

but these are very good questions, it’s not something you should feel like you have to know, and you should feel comfortable asking your social media manager how they do this :-)

let you in on a little secret - I am on some social media manager networking groups and even the most experienced can find it a bit of a headache figuring out how to get access to various kinds of social media platforms for clients, as they all operate differently and often not very intuitively! There are no silly questions in my opinion and how they answer should help you decide who is a good fit for you.

rattlemehearties · 18/03/2023 07:29

I think if you're asking these questions you actually DO know what you're talking about - you're correct on your assumptions about both platforms. Ask the potential managers how they do it.

Do you have a contract that you get them to sign? You could specify things like they can have the password to the account but must not change the email account that the account is registered to, and that they don't have access to this email account. They must not delete the account or post anything that is not in accordance with your business etc. Think of ways to protect your accounts and limit their access.

FusionChefGeoff · 18/03/2023 08:08

Definitely make sure they sign an agreement (you can find templates online) about how to keep your accounts safe / what to post etc

Also make sure you know how to change passwords and have a record of every password you've ever given them so if you need to suddenly remove access you can.

Don't reuse social passwords for anything else!! Change them if necessary so they are completely unique.
