Can you take new baby clothes back to the shop?

I have been given a lot of gifts for my new baby. Some of the clothes were very expensive and are brand new with the tags but she is unlikely to wear it. I have not got gift receipts. Can you return them to the shop? If not what would be best to do with them. It seems such a waste. £20 for one tiny little dress.

Technically shops can't do anything without a receipt.
However, sometimes they might help you out if it's still in new condition and offer shop credit for the item. Just remember they are not obligated to do this, it would be more like an act of extra good customer service.

Yes this. Sometimes shops might let you exchange for something else but they don't have to

I swapped a few things for a bigger size and shops were happy to do that. And then gave some to friends and to the charity shop.

Unless it's changed the likes of M&S will give you store credit if you do t have a receipt

They only give you it of the value of the day though not the original price (unless it's current stock of course)

boboshmobo · 18/03/2023 05:25

Which shop is it ? And when did you get them ?
I work in retail and it's worth asking but make sure you ask nicely and someone may help you.

We are still getting people bringing stuff back from Christmas gifts !!! With no receipt or tags ! 🙄🙄

RobinRobinMouse · 18/03/2023 05:28

Probably not, most places won't even let you exchange now without a receipt.

Username24680 · 18/03/2023 05:44

Congratulations on the new baby @ElephantGrey101 😍

Like everyone has said, shops are not obligated to do anything with no receipt. Many will allow you to exchange the item if it still has tags on though.
They would only exchange to the last price of the item though so if the £20 dress went into the sale for £8 you would be able to exchange to the value of £8, not £20.

I sold loads of stuff like that on Vinted when DS was small. We were gifted a lot that wasn’t appropriate size for the season - we ended up with 3 6month snowsuits for a November baby 😅 Stuff that’s new usually sells really quickly 😊

afinethingindeed · 18/03/2023 05:59

M&S let us exchange some baby clothes for the next size up without a receipt. We didn't do a like for like swap either - just picked something else in the next size.

Eileen101 · 18/03/2023 06:16

If no luck at the shop, pop it on vinted - I've sold a few things with tags quite quickly.

Isthereanygoldenwonder · 18/03/2023 06:29

I took loads back. Everywhere except primark let me either, swap or get store credit on a gift card. Definitely do it. It's such a waste otherwise. I had stuff from all supermarkets, next and M&S.

JacksonLeo · 18/03/2023 06:35

It depends on the return policy of the shop. Some shops may allow returns of new baby clothes if they are still in their original packaging with tags attached and a valid receipt is presented. However, it's always best to check the shop's return policy before making a purchase, so you know what options are available to you if you need to return an item.

It is good to know that Marks and Spencer might let you swap. Most of the ones I want to take back are from JoJo Maman Bebe. Their website says they won’t take anything back without receipts. Is it still worth a try. I don’t have any receipts for any of them.

Jojo mamam sell really good leggings, (the ones with pictures on bums) which are great for older babies and toddlers. About 2 for £15 on offer. So if you can exchange I would swap for a few of those in older sizes ie 12month +. The slipper sock booties things also handy for crawling age or just walking around furniture before they walk, so 6-12 month size. They sell books and toys at normal prices

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/03/2023 07:29

JoJo won't do returns without a receipt.

No as they've said they won't.

They sell pretty well on ebay though

TolkiensFallow · 18/03/2023 07:33

If they have tags then they might let you swap - but jojo stuff will also sell online at a good price.

It's up to the shop whether they choose to do anything without a receipt, I'm not sure what you mean by technically, there's no consumer legislation that says they cant

Unless it's difficult for you to get to the shop there's no reason not to askr or if it's Primark or sports direct who never go away from their rules, don't bother trying in there

Lindy2 · 18/03/2023 07:38

When we got lots gifted in all the same size the shops involved were happy for us to exchange without receipts.

We generally went for the same items as the gift giver had chosen but in a variety of different sizes.

I'd suggest you ask the shops involved. I agree £20 on one clothes item is a bit silly IMO. Babies grow so fast and poop and puke on everything.

ElephantGrey101 · 18/03/2023 07:59

I might have a go at selling some of them on Vinted. I have just looked and there are loads of things on there with the tags on. We do have a snow suit that she won’t grow into until it is too warm to wear it. I suppose that for shops like JoJo so there is no incentive to take it back. I wouldn’t bother taking anything back to Primark. I would just donate to the baby bank.
