What colour suit for City of London internship interview?

DS has an in-person internship interview for a City of London bank. What colour suit should he get for it? I'm assuming something conservative, but black, navy or grey? Navy is his preference, but I thought it worth checking.

It honestly won’t matter - as long as he looks like he’s made an effort to be smart they really, really won’t care.

(I’ve seen a million City interns, and interviewed dozens myself).

They’re after bright and personable people, anyone who tells you otherwise is either out of touch, or works on one of the very few stuffy parts of the City that you probably don’t want to touch anyway.

If he’s nervous there are organisations specifically that help with this stuff - two off the top of my head are Investment 20/20 and Talk About Black.

good luck!

I think any of those would be fine, needs to be dark and traditional. White shirt and a really boring tie.

Any of those is fine.

Whichever will be fine, they won't make a decision on the colour of his suit.

Personally I think a navy suit is the nicer of the three.

I agree that it shouldn’t matter. I have worked in the city - don’t now but I do now interview intern/trainees applicants at a professional firm. I’d never make a decision based on dress unless they looked like they hadn’t make any effort.

that said, I really hate a light grey sort of shiny suit. Dark is better. And make sure he polishes his shoes!

All fine, agree with pp about polished shoes. They don’t expect interns to be dressed in Savile Row but they do want it to look like you’re taking it seriously.

My DS wore a charcoal grey suit, white shirt and a burgundy coloured tie and for a graduate job in a bank and got the job.

I do early careers recruitment (not in the City). I do notice those who have a twist to what they wear. Shoes, well cut suit, scarf etc. I want our applicants to be comfortable and confident enough to express their personalities.

Any of the 3 you mentioned are fine, I'd go navy. Black is a bit... dark. Grey can ve me depending on shade. Navy suit site shirt and silk tie looks good. Black shoes.

Black is a bit funereal and not a colour that I see worn much in banking. I'd go for navy or grey as a safer choice, but of course a black suit won't stop a talented candidate progressing. Otherwise make sure everything fits and is clean. The only times I've heard clothing mentioned negatively were the instances candidates wore "statement" ties or looked completely disheveled.
