Gas usage

I’ve just read my gas and electricity meters and have worked out I’ve used around 1000 units of gas during the last six months. This sounds low to me, how does it compare to other households? I live in a 10 year old house and I have the heating on all day between 17 and 19.

Is that in m³ or ft³?

NewBootsAndRanty · 17/03/2023 17:15

Or kwh?

titchy · 17/03/2023 17:18

Is that 1000 units on the metre? If so that's cubic metres and you need to multiply by about 11 to get kwh - if you haven't done that then you've used a lot of gas not a little!

In answer to the OP, I'm in a 1 bed flat with heating set to 21 in the day/18 overnight.
From Sep 1 to today I've used 612 "units" on my meter, or 6606 kwh.

ComeOnYouSummer · 17/03/2023 17:23

Thank you that make more sense . 11000 sounds more like what I was expecting as we have the heating on all day.

So now my fuel bills look
they're going to be £900 per month!
I have attached my old meter readings, my new ones and my rates.

Don't forget that between now and September your gas consumption should be a hell of a lot lower.
How long is your fix due to last? (I'm assuming your on a fixed rate because of the low unit prices)

ComeOnYouSummer · 17/03/2023 17:35

It runs out September 24.

titchy · 17/03/2023 17:39

Your usage is very high though so you'd expect to pay a lot.

NewBootsAndRanty · 17/03/2023 17:42

Sept 2024 is a fair way off - good call on fixing on that!

You're best looking at your annual consumption to work out costs due to seasonal variation - have you got readings from this time last year?

My EPC certificate shows an estimate of how many kwh should be needed per year for adequate space heating (and a separate breakdown for water heating) according to my property type/age etc, and it seems pretty accurate.

There's a useful comparison chart here for average use in different size/occupancy properties:

dementedpixie · 17/03/2023 17:51

From your readings I worked out roughly that your gas was around £428 and electricity was around £1082 for 6 months with standing charges of about £38 and £42. That's a total around £1590 which is around £265 per month.

You should look at cutting usage before your prices rise from your fixed rate

ComeOnYouSummer · 17/03/2023 17:54

Thanks this is all very helpful.
My electric is high because we have an electric vehicle and two people WFH plus lots of gadgets.

OP posts:
CatOnTheChair · 17/03/2023 18:39

Your electricity usage is really high.

If both those readings are for 6 months, i get your electricity around 180/month.
And 85/month gas in winter (that sounds too low - hopefully someone else will double check my maths)

Where did you get 900 from?

Those would be massive higher if you weren't on a fix - very very very roughly twice the electricity price, and 3 times the gas.

ComeOnYouSummer · 17/03/2023 18:41

I multiplied the 1000 ish gas units I’ve used by 11 as someone said earlier to do and then worked it out.

Looks like Demented agrees with my maths.

The way I calculated it:
1000m3x11.2 gives 11,200kWh
3.9p/kWh, so multiply by 0.039 to get in £
£436.80 for 6 months. 72.80 per month, plus standing charges.

ComeOnYouSummer · 18/03/2023 08:07

I’ll update when I get my new bill in a few days.

EDF advised me to continue paying £300 per month, this is quite a relief as we’ve had our heating on from 7am until 10pm every day. The electric is high because we have an electric vehicle.

cakeorwine · 18/03/2023 08:36

Gas prices are currently 10p per kWh

But hopefully coming down from October.

So when your fixed rate ends, hopefully prices will be a bit similar to your current rate at 3.9 p per kWh or not too much above it

ComeOnYouSummer · 18/03/2023 08:44

But hopefully coming down from October
I really hope so, the price increases have been shocking.
