Best UK family holiday

PurpleElf · 17/03/2023 15:30

Would anyone like to share what their best UK family holiday has been? I have 3 primary school age children and a dog and our usual family holidays are renting a holiday house somewhere near the coast. I’m looking for inspiration for lovely places to go or something different to do!

MNHQ update: For further inspiration we've put together a roundup of the best UK family holidays featuring Mumsnetter-recommended destinations. We've also got guides to the best UK hotels for families, the best UK holiday parks and the best UK campsites.

Hope this helps Flowers

What kind of budget? And when in the year? Summer holidays?

When my dc were primary aged, we had some amazing holidays in Wales.

OllytheCollie · 17/03/2023 15:53

Yup Wales. Anglesey is amazing. And mid Wales near the coast. And Northumberland has incredible beaches too.

headingtosun · 17/03/2023 15:53

Northumberland or Dyfed, we enjoyed several holidays in both of these places when dc were younger ( primary school)

Honestly, the giants causeway and the coast around it. We stayed in port Stewart.

It would be school holidays in summer, Christmas or Easter (the longer breaks). Budget is flexible as we can save for it if needed.

I love Wales and would love to explore the coast there - my DH is actually Welsh but is always useless when I ask him for where we should go if we were to do a holiday in Wales🙄

We love the Isle of White. Lots of beautiful places to explore, sandy beaches. The ferry is an exciting start to the holiday although adds to the cost/ logistics.

Gwdihooooo · 17/03/2023 16:33

My kids love camping on Anglesey, near rocky coves for exploring. We go here because it’s not far from home… I guess the equivalent in the South would be Pembrokeshire or Cornwall.

We also go to Scotland camping with the bikes and canoe.

Basically anything involving water or hills to ride down and my kids are happy

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone! Clearly Wales is popular, so I’ll investigate further. And the other places suggested. We went to Northumberland last year and thought it was beautiful. We had such a lovely day trip to Lindisfarne (despite my children moaning for ages about the walk to the castle) and I’m sure we will be back one day.

We've had lovely holidays in Cornwall in the May half term - not sure I'd go in the summer holidays though. So many places/attractions to see & fantastic beaches.
We're going to the Isle of Wight this year - not been since I was child myself. Looks like still lots there to do.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 17/03/2023 17:15

Canal boat!

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/03/2023 18:09

Isle of Wight. Something about getting the ferry likes it feel like more of a holiday.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 17/03/2023 18:20

One of our favourite UK holidays was Woolocombe. We hired a beach hut for two weeks ( cost about £250 I think )and on most days we had breakfast, lunch and a bbq dinner on the beach while watching the sunset. The kids loved it. Body boarding and surfing all week and a few day trips further afield on cloudy days. We were there with friends who have a dog so we know it's dog friendly. We camped at a nearby campsite but there are lots of options.

Last year we went to three mile beach in Cornwall. Our dog loved it so we will be going again.

I absolutely adore the mid west Welsh coast. I spent every summer there as a child and take mine back there as much as I can.

Aberdyfi, Llywngwyril, Dolgellau area. The scenery is amazing and it’s never very busy.

Ooh or we go to NI every October. Stay in Ballycastle and visit the Antrim coast. Not sure what it’s be like in summer though.

I was looking at Woolacombe for this year, hadn’t thought about a beach hut hire but it sounds lovely. My dog would be on the beach all day if she could, so she’d approve 😊

Canal boat!

I’ve always wanted to do this! But I can’t lie, the thought of a very enclosed space with my kids makes me feel nervous - sometimes I need to escape their noise with some doors between us…

We're in Cornwall at the moment, near Looe. Whole area is grubby, tired and very run down. We've said we're not coming back again, it's just a rip off for tourists. £6 to park the car, 50p to use toilets that need bombing let alone cleaning. It's just one giant piss take, frankly.

We love Norfolk, wide open expanses of beach and lovely little towns. Less touristy and much nicer. Will head there next time.

lieselotte · 17/03/2023 18:49

Anywhere in Scotland or NI.

Northumberland is also good.

Kent is a bit of a hidden gem. Everyone dashes through on their way to France but it has a lot to offer.

Holidays we enjoyed when dc were primary age were-
North Yorkshire particularly filey, Flamborough and whitby. Also stayed in land once in pickering which was nice out of season as could go yo York, Harrogate on bad weather days.
North Wales.
North Norfolk particularly Wells next to the see.
Also dependent on age of dc we did Norfolk broads on a boat which was great. If a little young we once hired a bungalow on broads with a day boat for day trips.
Inland Tattershall lakes was great.
