Would could be moving around inside a bin bag in my back garden?

I put a half-full bin bag out in the garden which wouldn’t fit in the bin. The next day I could see a small rip and a few things leaking out. I went to pick them up then the bag started rustling and moving! Omg what is it?

I’m assuming it’s a rat but I am too scared to touch the bag as I hate them! I wondered if it could be a bird. Today the bag is not moving but I still don’t want to touch it or move it. Will it have made its way out or has it set up home?

It’s not bin day for another ten days. What should I do?

It could be rats, foxes will raid bin bags as well.

You can't just put plastic bags outside for days you need to buy a dustbin and put them in that.

Rat, mouse, bird, anything small that would scavenge from a bin bag

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 17/03/2023 12:57

A rat

IHateFlies · 17/03/2023 13:00

Rat but might be a hedgehog too.
It was a lovely surprise for us when the rustling in our shed turned out to be a cute trapped hedgehog rather than the rat we feared.

MuddyFeet01 · 17/03/2023 13:02

How long do you think it would stay in there?

Sorry, spotted the mistake in the title.

Tbh, I would be making the hole bigger and leaving the bag alone to let what ever critter in there, to get out.

Then once you’re sure it’s gone, rebag it, and place it somewhere secure

Dillydollydingdong · 17/03/2023 13:07

Anything will go for an unprotected bin bag. Rats, foxes, seagulls. You certainly can't leave it there for ten days. The rubbish will be all over the road and you'll have the neighbours complaining. Buy a cheap black bin from B&A and put it away.

headingtosun · 17/03/2023 13:09

It will stay in there until it has eaten its fill and return to top up when hungry again.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 17/03/2023 13:11

Rat, mouse, squirrel, hedgehog, cat, fox, magpie etc etc.

But most probably a rat.

MuddyFeet01 · 17/03/2023 13:11

I’ve got two big bins, one in the front and one in the back. After the bin day collection, I went to sort out this bin bag and that’s when I spotted it moving. I didn’t think there was any food in there but maybe there were packets or wrappers or something. Won’t do that again.

Yes I thought I would cut a big hole in it and hope it escapes.

Rat

skgnome · 17/03/2023 13:15

You are aware that most likely it was open by one animal and another can also go in
they maybe attracted by the smell of food, even birds looking for nesting materials…
put some boots, gloves, long sleeves and long trousers, gently poke the bag… start bagging and put inside the bin

rainbowstardrops · 17/03/2023 13:16

I'd open the bag. It might even be a cat that has got stuck.

GoldDuster · 17/03/2023 13:18

It probably won't set up home in a bin bag, they nest in one place out of the way, and then go out scouting for food. A bin bag probably isn't a good bet for a nest.

MuddyFeet01 · 17/03/2023 13:22

I think I will have to do what a pp says if I am brave enough ie open up the bag and rebag the stuff wearing gloves.

Get one of those litter picker poles and rebag from a distance? 😅

Best of luck OP. You do have my sympathies even though it’s mildly amusing.

whataballbag · 17/03/2023 13:32

Cut a hole, poke with a mop handle and run

MuddyFeet01 · 17/03/2023 13:44

I will definitely poke and run.

Googling litter pickers now 🤣

My first thought on seeing an independently mobile bin-bag would be some sort of ravenous demonic entity that’s been summoned by my scent. Is it quite a long mop handle?
