Quick car question

If your car is still within the manufacturer’s warranty, and you think it needs looking at (unusual engine noise) is it a good idea to take it to the dealer to be checked over?
Might seem silly not to, but I was thinking that if it’s within warranty the dealer might try and tell you there’s nothing wrong, to avoid doing a free repair?
Is it better to get the problem diagnosed at an independent garage then take it to the dealer to get the work done?
I don’t really know how this works.
Thanks

If you are fortunate to have a good relationship with a local independent then getting then to give it a look over wouldn't be a bad idea. But if not what's in it for them, unless they charge you to look it over?
I'd get it back to the main dealer and soon as possible. It may be nothing and it might be doing damage or about to fail.

If it's in warranty then straight back to dealer. Manufacturer covers costs not the dealer.

I wouldn't take it anywhere else first as a) it may need specialist equipment which not all independents have b) they might want the business if it's something they can do c) they'll charge and d) if the dealer finds out they might then use as an excuse

No straight back to the dealership. Its their responsibility to sort it out within warranty. If its something you've done, you can always take it somewhere independent / cheaper to do the work, but ask if that will affect the remaining warranty.

Back to the dealership!

Yes, you must take it back to the dealer. We had a problem with a car that was less than a year old. It had a DSG gearbox and was making a strange noise. Turns out it was a known fault and it took a week to sort out and would have cost over £1000 had it not been in warranty.

Definitely back to the dealer. Don't worry about them trying to get out of repairing it, either.

I took my car back (used car, came with a two month warranty) because of a weird noise when braking but they said everything was fine. Just a few weeks later, car was back for a service and they said I needed to pay £££ for new brake discs and pads. I hit the roof, pointed out that they'd inspected them just weeks before and asked what on earth had happened in the meantime to cause so much damage they'd gone from fine to needing replaced immediately.

Two minutes later, they phoned back to say they'd replace them all for free as I'd raised the issue during the warranty period... Hmm

Just in case it could be covered under warranty, back to dealer.
