What were your ambitions/dreams when you were young?

Did they come true? I always wanted to act. My only happy memory of secondary school is doing drama in the first year. It’s also the only thing I was ever good at (apart from English literature). Then puberty hit, followed by mental health problems and bullying, and so on, and all that went out the window.

I’m not bitter. My life could have been a thousand times worse. But I often wonder what life might have been like if all those silly daydreams had come true. I wanted to do something creative, live in New York, the usual stuff - if not an actor, then a painter or writer, hanging out with interesting, arty people, etc.

When I was very young, I wanted to live in a mansion by myself and rescue orphans (I read too many 'Mandy' type comics Grin ). As I got older I had various ideas of what I wanted to do - mostly creative things, similar to you, though not acting as I'm awful at it.

Didn't happen - I've worked in office jobs all my working life. Could be worse but my teenaged self would be disappointed, I think.

I doubt I’d have been any happier if my dreams had all come true. I’ve heard it said that you should never confuse happiness with success. And it’s a good point. The more success you have, the more you want, the more you expect, and the further you have to fall. In fact, people who fail, or go through traumas when young, often end up happier than people who’ve had lots of success. They are more humble, have smaller egos, and expect far less. They are also more grateful for the little happiness or peace that they do achieve.

To write for TV, or work in TV production.

No, it didn’t. Mainly because I was just laughed at for wanting to do it and never had any idea how to go about it.

So I did jack shit instead.
