Does it matter what happens to items you give away?

Nothing of earth shattering importance, but just wondered what others feel about this.
I have had to replace an 18 months old cooker as one of the hob plates isn’t working, and the replacement part is on back order with no idea when it will be available.
It’s a basic, but otherwise OK cooker, so I advertised it for free on Facebook. It will be left, under cover, but outside the flat by the person installing the new cooker.
I suppose I had hoped that it would help someone who needed a cooker.
The first 2 people to contact me have been scrap collectors. I only had the briefest of chats with one of them but he seemed surprised that I didn’t just want it out of the way or that I cared what happened to it.
Is he right?

As much as I would like to help someone out, I dont think an oven with broken hob plates will be that useful. Given its only 18 months old and showing faults already, its highly likely to break in another way too.

When you have little to nothing, it's really disheartening and a little humiliating to have lots of broken, half working items. Then it's the removal cost when the item inevitably gives up for good.

So I would say scrap it. If its not good enough for you to use, it's not good enough for someone else. If it helps you let go, the scrap person will get money which could be helping towards their bills so you are technically still helping someone.

I’d just want it out of the way.

If someone needs a cooker, a cooker without a working job isn’t exactly ideal, is it? Especially when we’re trying to use less energy.

I get that you’d like to feel you’re doing something nice for someone, but it’s just scrap.

People are different. You'll probably get some very dismissive replies & some quite nasty ones.

it would bother me. I would want it to go to someone who would appreciate it & id offer to let them know when the replacement part arrives.

well actually I'd have just waited for the replacement part! 😂😂

I get very attached to everything! I know what drives it, but it does my head in & wish I was different.

If I don't need something the first person to take it off my hands can do what they want with it. It's no longer my problem!

If you are truly desperate for a free cooker with one ring broken would be grand ( assuming 1 of 4?h

But I think you will find that you are not living on that type of community - and people who do are unlikely to have transport for example

SpinningFloppa · 16/03/2023 10:58

No I would rather it go to scrap. There are people out there that will read it’s partly broken, still take it then harass you because it’s broken, I’ve actually seen this happen before to someone.

If it had been in my home I would definitely have waited for the replacement part, or just managed with the 3 working hob plates, but it’s in a rented property so I don’t have that option.
The general consensus so far though seems to be that scrap is fine.

@Allthecoolusernamesaregone

oh yeah, it's a bit different if it's for a rental property, you just need a fully functioning one asap, not waiting around for a part that no one can tell you when it might arrive!

You asked if people 'cared' what happened, not if scrapping was ok.

I would 'care' (too much so), do I think it's ok to scrap 'yes' (but I'd still contact some local charities to see if they know anyone that could use it. (But I'm not saying others should do that!)
