My 3 year old is currently in theatre - can you distract me?

Any distractions welcome- weird wonderful facts, interesting places, lovely pictures, anything would be really helpful and give me something to look at instead of watch ing the clock. He's been in for an hour so far and hoping he will be ready for me to go and meet within this hour. Thank you.

I’m absolutely fascinated by the Barkley marathon this year. It’s an ultra in America but very eccentric - no spectators, no real-time coverage apart from some guy called Keith on Twitter with a spreadsheet. It’s 5 loops of the 20 mile course and has to be completed within a really tight time or you have to drop out. We’ve currently got a female Brit (Jasmin Paris) who has just started loop 4. She’s last woman standing this year and if she completes the lot she’ll be the first woman to manage it. I’m absolutely hooked!

Hope your little one is ok. My husband works in theatres and he always gives extra special care to littles to make sure they are super comfy and feel as happy as they can Flowers

I've been watching a lot of YouTube recently -- found out some fascinating things about tribes etc in Africa, so very watchable on night time feeds. Do you have any earphones with you?

Sending a big handhold x

Aww, been there, I feel for you OP.

Don’t panic if it takes longer than they said, IME the doctor often gives the time for the actual surgery, but before that the anaesthetist gets the anaesthetic all properly set up, reverses all that at the end and lots of checking before calling you to recovery.

When you see your little one in recovery, encourage deep breathing, it gets the anaesthetic gases out of their system quicker.

Sorry for not being distracting!

don't be alarmed if it takes longer before you get to go & see him.

Audible. Help a dinosaur out. I had audible free credits, then I forgot to cancel & they're charging me monthly, I can cancel no problem, but apparently lose all my credits!?

I've tried a few samples but can't find a 'reader/narrator/whatever' that doesn't speak at the spead of a drunk snail drowning in sugar, no way could I listen to it.

How do I find a person with a normal voice???

mindutopia · 16/03/2023 10:35

Could you go and get a coffee and some food? When dd was in hospital, I found it really hard to get away and actually eat. It was an emergency and other than a piece of toast and some mini cheddars from the bottom of my bag, I didn't eat for about 16 hours. When she went into theatre finally, I took 20 minutes to go to the canteen for a coffee and food and then I did a brisk loop outside to get fresh air (and cried where no one would see!). Even if you've eaten already this morning, may be good to get some food. In my experience, even when they come out, it can be another 30-60 minutes before they come get you as they let them wake up first and then it may be hard to get away for anything.

mindutopia · 16/03/2023 10:39

Agree too with what everyone else said about it taking longer than you'd expect. With dd, there were 3 possible options for how well it could go - the best possible scenario (20 minutes), the more complicated one (60 minutes) and if things were really tricky (1.5 hours). She was gone for 2 hours and I was starting to panic. But all was fine, it literally went as smoothly as it could have. Surgeons just aren't good at estimating how long it will be for us and not them.

MeinKraft · 16/03/2023 10:39

Aw hand holding OP I've been there. My son was under for 4 1/2 hours when he was 1. Get down to the shop and get loads of snacks.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 16/03/2023 10:41

Flowers for you.

This is my local beach, we went there one evening a few weeks ago when it was over 40 degrees during the day (Australia).

I find looking at water really calming, hope it helps!

Use the time to get yourself a drink, some food and have a wee. I always like a little nosey in the league of friends shop, the one in my local hospital has some really retro sweets. I found some cherry drops in there the other day when my son was also in theatre that have probably been sat there since the 90s

Wishing him a speedy recovery

Have you got Facebook @quirkyquerty ? My friend just posted this - something lovely to show your little one when they come round

curlyfries22 · 16/03/2023 11:02

If it makes you smile.... I read theatre as in acting theatre and was ready to tell you that they'll be great in an all tot's production of Fiddler on the Roof.

In all seriousness, giving you (and him) big hugs

I watch ice skating videos on youtube when I want to drift away for a bit. is my favourite.

Anon9898 · 16/03/2023 11:07

My son had an op op on Sunday. Said 20 mins was gone 40. He is now absolutely fine and more please with the week off school then the actual operation itself.

Hope your little one is OK and is soon on the mend

elliejjtiny · 16/03/2023 11:09

I've been there OP. I always watch trashy tv when my dc are under. Make sure you go to the loo just before it's time to go and get them. I find my dc is (understandably) quite clingy when he comes back from theatre so you probably won't want to leave them to go to the loo.

spiderlight · 16/03/2023 11:12

There are some beautiful wildlife photos here - some of them are incredible!

Hope it's all going really smoothly and you're back with your little one soon.

quirkyquerty · 16/03/2023 11:14

The Kara and Nate videos are good too. Some luxury, some roughing it, some fun and some downright terrifying (crazy high ladder in the Alps!).

Their recent one on swimming with Orcas was brilliant.

The HP audio books are great though - I lost many hours/days listening to them recently. Maybe don't listen to the last one though - I'd forgotten how dark it was!

Hope your little one is back in your arms soon. Mummy cuddles make everything better. x

Sirzy · 16/03/2023 11:22

Glad he is back with you now the wait is horrible. Hope he is home soon

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 16/03/2023 11:54

He's fast asleep and you must be fighting the urge to hug him so tightly! ❤️

So glad he's next to you. Try to get a few naps.

Squamata · 16/03/2023 11:55

Glad he's back with you OP!

Someone posted this the other day, it's an excellent way to waste time (and entertain a small child) neal.fun/wonders-of-street-view/
