I am having a clear out

Solongtoshort · 16/03/2023 08:25

I have decided enough is enough l am having a clear out today.

Do l…..just take everything that is useable to the charity shop or sell it?

Is it worth the hassle trying to sell stuff. I’m not desperate for cash but a bit wouldn’t go a miss. Is it worth all the effort or will l feel better mentally just giving it up.

Help me decide.

going to start as soon as l get back from the school.

This is something I really struggle with OP. I have a huge pile of almost brand new clothes that I keep saying I will sell and never do. At this point the space is more valuable but I still can’t bring myself to throw them away (charity shop not bin!)

Sorry I don’t have the answer!

LondonBricks · 16/03/2023 08:29

Cheap on Vinted. Locker drop off- no need even to pack with some companies.

Fairyliz · 16/03/2023 08:30

I think it depends on the value of the items. When we cleared out the in-laws house I sold a few ‘antique’ bits that went for £20 - £40 each on eBay. So that was worth my time listing, packing taking to the Post Office.
However if you have dresses/tops/trousers you might only be able to sell for £5 each I think it’s probably not worth the time and annoyance from time wasters.

Mindymomo · 16/03/2023 08:31

If you’ve got the time, then sell them on marketplace local to you. Friends do, don’t make a lot, but they usually sell in bundles, to make it easier.

1990s · 16/03/2023 08:32

As PP said, Vinted is very easy. It’s more easy for me as I have the shops where I drop off the parcels very close, so even a few quid is worth it. Price stuff pretty cheaply and it will sell and you can drop off a few at once. It all adds up!

VillanellePinkDress · 16/03/2023 08:33

Vinted is soooo simple!
Way less hassle than ebay.
Just buy a load of those plastic bag envelope things (every PO has them)
You don't even need to print labels anymore. Just take to your local shop that does Evri etc and they scan the qr the seller sends once you accept their offer.
Honestly, I'm technically challenged haha and even I can do it. Stuff I almost took to the charity shop, I've made around £80! It's made super simple on Vinted 😊

Marchforward · 16/03/2023 08:36

Depends on the type of stuff. Kid’s toys I put on Facebook collection only and if hasn’t gone in a week I take it to the charity shop.

Greentree1 · 16/03/2023 08:42

Car boot sale? Get rid of a lot of it in one day hopefully. Might have to wait until the weather picks up a bit though.

jerrywesterby · 16/03/2023 08:56

Just take it all to the charity shop - today! It will be gone, you will have achieved and given the charity a boost! Treat yourself to a bunch of flowers on the way home as a reward! couldn't be arsed with the hassle of selling bits of clothes on vinted for a couple of quid

Adhdsucks · 16/03/2023 08:59

I think the problem with Vinted is when stuff doesn’t sell and you’re back to square one and you still have most of what you planned to clear out. I do love Vinted and use it a lot but not everything sells.

sunglassesonthetable · 16/03/2023 09:14

Get Rid!

You're complicating the issue. This stalls people time and again.

When you have a nice, calm clutter free space then start selling stuff.

In the mean time you're holding the whole process up .

Solongtoshort · 16/03/2023 09:15

Thanks ladies, this is the plan.

Wardrobes new/ nearly new Vinted
anything else charity shop unless it’s tat.

Garage (where all the toys go to die) either the toy library l have just read has opened back up or charity shop unless new/ hardly used which l can’t imagine we have many of.

Music magpie for cds/dvds l seen a stand yesterday in Asda.

I am sure l have seen somewhere that takes unwanted make up and bag for life’s , god know why l have so many of them, l think l have enough for 5 lives.

Wish me luck realistically l know it’s going to take me longer than the 5 hours l have but l am going to be ruthless.

If it’s not gone in a week l will charity shop it.

Good luck! I've got four big bags of charity shop stuff in my boot, I was ruthless getting them out of the house but have been driving them round ever since! Going to drop them off today.

minipie · 16/03/2023 09:21

Do you have the Olio app in your area? I have found this brilliant for giving away things that a charity shop might not want. And the recipient comes to collect so no need to pack stuff up and schlep to the charity shop.

Also I prefer giving directly as I know it won’t get binned, I suspect some of our local charity shops bin anything that isn’t going to sell easily and quickly as they have very little space.

I love decluttering. I actually had a dream last night where I was decluttering 😂

mastertomsmum · 16/03/2023 09:29

We have been decluttering for months on and off. Vinted is quite simple, Ebay I found too much effort. Charity shops are really good for a weekly dropoff approach and for surplus crockery or other ‘can’t be bothered to figure out how to pack it’ items. Be aware they won’t accept everything. They don’t usually want coat hangers, kids leather shoes, electrical items, helmets even if still in the box, socks and undies

MumToTooManyBoys · 16/03/2023 09:29

Charity shop. Don't over think it.

WinterMusings · 16/03/2023 10:00

Do you want your kids input on their clothes/toys? If you do, leave it in the house, put what's left after they've rescued loads, onto vinted. If you don't, take it to the charity shop before you pick them up from school.

sending you coffee!!

gotmychristmasmiracle · 16/03/2023 14:29

Please send me some motivation, got a big pile to go through ✨

MaidOfSteel · 16/03/2023 14:46

If you do decide to clear out clothes & shoes that could still be worn, you could put them in one of those clothes collection bins. They're often found in supermarket car parks.

BeforetheFlood · 16/03/2023 14:59

There's an instagrammer/podcaster called Hannah Bullivant who is basically the decluttering queen. She does courses you can sign up for, some of them are pretty pricey, but from time to time she offers them for free and I've done them then (I think there might also be old podcast episodes on decluttering too.) She focuses a lot on the stuff that's hard to get rid of, the things that hold you back and how/where to move stuff along to. One of her things is don't make yourself feel guilty for not going through the hassle of trying to make money from your decluttered things. Give yourself permission to take it to a charity shop for a swift, easy result!

I've just checked her website and she offers a free decluttering guide which might be good for a quick motivation boost

Freecycle is really good for getting rid of items - people can come to your door (if that's what you want) to collect on an agreed day/ time so you don't have to take the item anywhere. Also means you are passing on the item to someone who actually wants it. I've used it loads for getting rid of items (and sometimes for picking up items I wanted)

Solongtoshort · 16/03/2023 22:06

Thank you for all your reply’s.

God knows how l thought l would get three wardrobes and a garage done in 5 hours.l have done two tip runs, 2 charity shop drops and gifted loads of toys to the toy library who were thrilled as there was brand new toys there, gave 3 bikes and 6 scooters to a re cycle charity. The worst was the cupboard with 5000 screws, 700 Allen keys 6 broken scooter (l actually don’t really think they were all ours and one of the bikes).

It’s not a garage that we put a car in, it has washing machine, dryer and all the laundry stuff in, it’s like a garage and a half. L literally just use the laundry bit all the other stuff was DC’s and DH’s. I gave it a hover and brush as well. I wish l had got a skip. I am going to make a gym area in there, when l have got rid of the chest freezer. I feel so much better for it.
