Had an accident in driving instructors car - he said I have to pay for it

A question for uk learner drivers

I had a driving lesson today and I had an accident, I took the wing mirror off when passing a parked car. Instructor said he’ll try to lower the price as much as possible but he’ll be in touch with how much I need to pay. Is this right? Do I need to pay? My previous driving instructor said if there was an accident then his insurance covers the damage

I feel like he’s trying to con me. This was the first lesson I ever had with the guy, I had about 50 lessons with my other instructor and he made sure I didn’t have any accidents by using the dual control. This guy today just tilted the steering wheel away from the parked car and it still hit it.

If you’re having lessons with a reputable driving school instructor, your lesson fees factor in their insurance. You don’t have your own personal insurance policy, you’re driving under their insurance.
I really can’t believe people on here tried to tell the OP she had to pay money to to the instructor.
You’re driving under their insurance. You don’t pay anything for any accident.

Enjoy your newfound freedom, congratulations!

Nope. His insurance pays.
Please find another instructor.

Well done for passing so soon after that knock to your confidence OP!

I'm glad nothing further came of the incident. I did read the thread at the time.

Automatics aren't nearly as restrictive for options as they once were either. Manuals will be slowly phased out. It might be a moot point by the time my DCs come of age, but DS1 is ND and I want him to learn automatic as it's just fewer levels of co-ordinating and processing to adapt to.

Well done!

Great update. Congratulations on passing your test. Brilliant news all round

UPDATE:
I started automatic lessons immediately, was ready for my test within 5 lessons, got lucky with a cancellation and yesterday I passed my test! I kept slipping gears and people almost hit me up the back a few times, making so many mistakes was stressful. Hopped in the automatic car and immediately everything was so relaxed and simple.

i never heard from that instructor again. I just blocked the guy. Someone from the driving school phoned back and said that I don’t need to pay a thing and that the instructor made a mistake eye roll (definitely just trying to get money from me ffs) at least it’s over

Amazing stuff ! Congratulations 🥳 . Automatic cars are brilliant anyway and let’s be honest with the electric cars and hybrids coming in more and more they will all be auto . Enjoy your new freedom

I think after 50 lessons I would reconsider driving.

SirChenjins · 21/06/2023 12:37

It's amazing how many posters don't bother rtt

I had over 50, it took me ages to grasp it. I’ve now been driving for 10 years, never had an accident and am a confident careful driver. So some of us take more time.

anyway op glad it worked out!

MasterCherry · 21/06/2023 13:09

Congratulations, op! Very pleased for you.
