Why do some shops not display prices?

There’s a secondhand baby shop near me that advertises their items on social media. Whenever someone asks what the price is they say “I’ll message you”.

I’m curious why a shop would do this? She is selling something I am looking for, but this is putting me off.

They want to vary their pricing?

they’re charging a stupid amount?

Usernameless16 · 15/03/2023 11:46

Yes, I’m wondering if the price varies per customer for the same item.

They vary the price according to how wealthy/poor the customer comes across.

I wouldn't bother with them

WinterMusings · 15/03/2023 11:54

Maybe there are a lot of variables

cot
cot & mattress
cot & bedding
cot & mattress & bedding

just ask how much the thing is that you're interested in, decide if it's worth that much to YOU. Nothing else matters.

lovechickencrisps · 15/03/2023 11:56

Usually because their prices are ridiculous and they want you to fall in love with whatever they're trying to sell before you see the price which would be a hugely off putting.

squashyhat · 15/03/2023 12:14

I guess they are going by the 'if you have to ask the price you can't afford it' mantra. I might expect it from high-end clothing and jewellery shops (with commensurately snobby assistants) but secondhand baby gear? 🙄

Absolutely this. I see it all the time in the FB horse world. Just tell us the price already!

Usernameless16 · 15/03/2023 13:02

Think I’ll give it a miss!

I would guess it’s because some babies will sell for much more than others.

SpinningFloppa · 15/03/2023 13:05

This annoys me on Facebook when someone asks for a service think man and van or gardener etc then the person says how much every single time they say “I will message you” sometimes I’m looking because I want a quote myself but they never say the price upfront

BouncingWorms · 15/03/2023 13:09

It’s when it’s actual shops as well. The Range rarely have prices, big signs saying 30% off, which is totally unhelpful when I have to chase down a staff member to ask the price. Also Tesco has started.

🤣 thank you for this.

To make you feel more invested
If you have to strike up a conversation then you begin to feel more involved with the seller and start to feel an obligation.

BusterGonad · 15/03/2023 13:14

Because they are trying to create a bit of mystic over it. And the more comments the more it gets seen. I hate it. Just show the bloody price.

gogohmm · 15/03/2023 13:18

Are they selling on behalf of others?

This. I wouldn’t buy from them on principle alone.

This drives me nuts as well, especially clothes shops.

In Italy, clothes shops all have the prices on stuff in the window, even (especially) the high end shops. This makes perfect sense, people either decide tge can afford the stuff/get an idea of the price pitch of the shop, or they qualify themselves out as they decide they can't afford the stuff. Shop assistants aren't taking up time with people who aren't going to buy anything and people might get a nice surprise and see they can afford it after all. I'm sure shops actually sell more this way.

Uk shops? Nooo, all the prices turned around so you can't see them so you walk away as you don't want to be embarrassed asking the price and then not be able to afford it
