Best electronic photo frame for elderly dad?

Pandyluna · 15/03/2023 11:27

I’d like to buy my dad an electronic photo frame, he’s in his 80s and really not great with technology so it would need to be something I could set up easily and is very very straightforward to use. I’ve found one I think I can add photos to remotely as well.

Budget is ideally under £100, I know you can buy really expensive ones.

Anyone have one and can recommend? What are best storage types? Is there a pause feature if you want to stay longer on a photo?

This is one I found on Amazon:
www.amazon.co.uk/AEEZO-Auto-Rotate-Unlimited-Mountable-Black/dp/B08K3FT8ZN?tag=georiot-trd-21&ascsubtag=dcw-gb-5166683785885600000-21&geniuslink=true
and

thank you!

There's ones now that you can email photos to instead of using a USB.

I'm assuming £129 is out of your budget? It's normally £149 but they have £20 off at the moment for mothers day.
If not, the Aura frame is incredible, you can add photos via an app remotely so you can keep it updated, and you can set it to come on/turn off at certain times etc.
We bought ours (and several presents for grandparents) on amazon as we had vouchers, but you can also buy direct from Aura.

Assuming he has wi-fi, I would consider a used iPad (music magpie £130) locked to the photo app, so he can't access anything else.

Assuming the photos you want to share are already on an apple iCloud account, I would create a shared album that is shared with the iCloud account on the iPad.

You can then manage the shared album with the rest of the family, so they can add/remove photos and add comments, and it will automatically update his iPad without any itervention.

Whilst there is a (looping) slideshow mode in photos, it will not pick up any changes to the (shared) album, until it's stopped and restarted.

It would also have the advantage that it could be used for FaceTime calls if he's able.

Obviously the iPad would need to be charged or left plugged in, if this was an issue I would consider an iPad that supports wireless charging. (££)

If this sounds feasible, please don't hesitate to ask me for any assistance or clarification.

We have a Facebook portal for mum - we bought it predominantly for doing video calling into her care home but it has a good photo app which plays albums from the Facebook page.
Mum doesn't have a FB account that she uses so we set up a completely closed profile just linked to her portal - I can create albums for her online even though I'm miles away.
It's fairly idiot proof and very simple to use

Thanks! That’s not out of my budget but I wasn’t 100% if it will go down well or not so didn’t want to spend too much! Do you have a link please? Do you know if you can pause the screen on particular photos?

He does have an iPad that semi works but doesn’t like it… however I could put it in a different case and he’d probably have no idea so that’s really interesting thank you! I’ll look into it

Hi, we have the Aura Carver, it's available on Amazon (but I think temporarily out of stock), otherwise it's available directly from Aura. Not sure if I can put a link but it comes up really easily on google.

I'm not sure that you can pause, but via the app you can change the settings for how quickly the photos go though, and you can swipe back/forwards on the frame itself if you want to go back to a photo. I think you can also double tap to like photos so they come up more frequently etc. It's quite intuitive. Equally, the person using it literally doesn't have to do anything day-to-day and you can control it all and change settings remotely via the app.
Also multiple people can use the app linked to the frame so my siblings etc can also all add photos to it which is really handy.

We bought a Google hub rather than a photo frame for grandparents. It's easy to set up so it shows photos from Google photo albums, which makes it really simple to add nee photos for them.

Very easy to swipe back if you want to loom at a phot again, although I don't think ther is a pause option.

I got my dad one from nixplay.com and it’s been brilliant. The app is simple enough for me to send him photos from my phone, and he loves that new pictures just pop up without him needing to do anything. You can also set it to turn off at night, so it’s not glowing all the time, which he really likes.
