Apparently it's just been made law that it's compulsory to microchip all cats.

I've always microchipped my cats and as far as I'm aware, most people do. I've never met someone who didn't microchip their cat. We risk a £500 fine for not complying.

How would they know who owns the cat?

blebbleb · 14/03/2023 13:25

Great news! So many irresponsible pet owners. Not sure how it would be enforced though.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 14/03/2023 13:25

How can they prove its anyones cat if its not microchipped? Grin

I read this yesterday and I think it's a good idea and all cats should be microchipped but I wonder how it will be policed.
How will they know if people have chipped their cat, and if a stray is picked up and not chipped how will they know who to fine?

Actually something like this occurred to me too. Bird flu, rumours of a cull re COVID..

Cats return home. They have incredible homing instincts and fortitude. Plus, some people can communicate with cats. Like Jim Carrey.

AnnoyedFromSlough · 14/03/2023 13:30

This doesn't apply to Scotland, in case that's relevant to anyone reading.

I don't know about Northern Ireland.

A stray cat doesn't have an owner, so there isn't anyone to fine.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/03/2023 13:32

Scanning cats should be available to anyone and then you can demand that the neighbours from number six come and collect their cat's shit and replace the bedding plants.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/03/2023 13:32

That'll liven up Facebook a bit

Silverlog · 14/03/2023 13:35

I can't believe time & space was given to voting this through when there are other hugely pressing issues to deal with.

I guess if you went to claim your unchipped lost cat you'd be liable for a £500 fine.

Well it been compulsory for dogs and horses for years. They've managed not to cull them yet

My sisters cat spends most of her time at another house.

As I read it, you'd have 21 days to get it chipped, and if you still didn't THEN you'd get a fine.

Also doesn't apply to farm cats (or feral cats of course)

They wouldn't.

All it will do is fine people who take their cats to places like vets etc.

Not entirely sure the point of it tbh

It will stop people taking them to vets for treatment

Vinorosso74 · 14/03/2023 13:43

It's not until June 2024 and only in England. It's been compulsory for dogs for a while now yet you still see posts about found dogs who aren't chipped. I do wonder how many dog owners have been fined for unchipped animals? Would make it so much easier to reunite missing cats. Rescues also have to hold onto strays for a time to give owners the chance to come forward which takes up much needed rescue spaces.

RightOnTheEdge · 14/03/2023 13:50

I guess it's the same as the old dog licence, vaccinations and anything else like that, good, responsible owners will do it and the irresponsible owners won't bother so nothing much will change.

TheClash2023 · 14/03/2023 13:55

Good. Cats, dogs and horses should all be microchipped
