If you've moved house, where did you start (decoration wise)

No major works to be done, just decorating. Repainting, floors and woodwork.

Where did you start, I can't even start to work it out 🤔

Decorating whilst it was empty !

Wynandham · 13/03/2023 22:34

All rooms need doing. Living room, dining room, kitchen and bedrooms.

Bathroom does need doing but leaving that till last as I probably want it retiled.

I would start with the sitting room - that way you will have one lovely room to enjoy while the rest in shabby.
Then one or other of the children's rooms ( if you have them)
Then the spare room so you can go there while you do your room
Then your bedroom
Downstairs bathroom
Ensuite bathroom
Family bathroom
Kitchen last

Corcomroe · 13/03/2023 22:36

Are you doing it yourself? Have you unpacked fully - ie is there a lot of stuff to be moved in order to paint?

Thighdentitycrisis · 13/03/2023 22:39

@Was126orbustandmaybebust
lot of bathrooms!

Justmeandthedog1 · 13/03/2023 22:40

If there’s no alterations, electrical work to be done I’d unpack as little as possible.
If you have a garage put as much in there that can be safely stored.
if you can leave a bedroom empty by putting kids into same room or you sleeping in what will be spare room decorate bedrooms first. Rotate people around to give an empty-ish room to paint.
Then kitchen
Then living room
Then hall, stairs, landing.

Bathrooms last.

Weatherwax13 · 13/03/2023 22:41

I always start with the kitchen as I get quite antsy if my kitchen's a mess. Feel a lot better if it's clean and organised.

Bathroom is a close second for me but completely understand what you're saying about it probably bring the biggest job.

. Then the lounge because it's so nice to have a comfortable space at the end of the day. I find when you have a mammoth task ahead it feels more bearable when the places you spend most of your time are done.

You can shut the other doors and have a breather.

Yes all ourselves.

Not now, happening in a few months.

I'm thinking to get it done before unpacking otherwise we will just be unpacking then packing again?!

I thought I could have everything in dining room and start with living room then swap over?

Are you doing anything to the carpets or flooring in any rooms? As for us we had to do all the rooms that were getting new carpet before it got put in which gave us a deadline and an order which helped a lot.

If we hadn't had to do the hallways because of the stairs carpet, I'd have done kids bedrooms first, then our bedroom, then living room then kitchen then hall ways, purely to have somewhere nice to relax first so getting bedrooms done was my priority, also because it was top down then, ie the whole top floor was done then ground floor.

I also did our little toilet as one of the first rooms because it was quick and easy and made me feel like I'd made a start...

mindutopia · 14/03/2023 11:15

The garden. 😂Honestly, we moved a year ago and some rooms still have boxes in them that I've never touched and they've become part of the furniture now.

Personally, I would start in the area you will use the most. That's probably why we started in the garden because we are outside as much as possible.

FruityLittleDrink · 14/03/2023 11:19

Don't unpack!
If there's no urgency in needing a new bathroom etc or ordering carpets that'll take weeks to come - start at the furthest room from the front door. It's easier cleaning wise and you won't damage any new work on your way past.

Focus on 1 room at a time & don't stop until it's totally done. We recently redecorated after 17 years living in the house.
We'd decorated before moving in & had touched up & repainted over the years but it was time for a refresh & change in all the rooms.

We started with the bathroom as we had to replace the shower so that meant retiling.
Then we did the spare bedroom as we created a home office so got rid of the bed & got a sofa bed. We have more space but can still have an overnight first etc

Then dds room which really needed an overhaul & some new furniture.

After that we moved down stairs & did our sitting room. We kept the sofas but repainted, new shelving, cushions, rugs , lamp etc

Then a second reception room. Again kept suite of furniture but got new sideboard & coffee table. Etc

Our room is next & I can't wait as we never really did it right the first time round. We need a new bed & built in storage.

We've upgraded lots of furniture from IKEA to nicer, investment pieces.

It makes a huge difference to the quality of our lives in the house.

Kitchen, playroom, sitting room and our bedroom needed doing when we moved in. We did the playroom and our bedroom first so that both the kids and we had lovely places to be, and because they were quite easy to do (just painting really).

We haven't done anything else and we've been here about 5 years now! I can't really face the cost of redoing the kitchen, and we've learned to love the sitting room as is with a few additions of our own lights, soft furnishing etc. (To be fair it wasn't horrible in any way - quite neutral.)

CatOnTheChair · 14/03/2023 11:43

Kids bedrooms - the house we moved I to had kids at a very different stage to ours, and the rooms weren't apeaing to them.
The the study, as again it wasn't really appropriate for DHs work meetings when his artificial background failed.
Bathroom next, then hall landing and stairs.

Basically, we started with the rooms we disliked the most!

Pammy39 · 14/03/2023 11:45

We moved into an unfurnished house. So first we did the walls, floors, then the kitchen and bathrooms. Then we started with the bedrooms, first the children's then ours. The garden was the last.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 14/03/2023 11:47

From the top and work down. We’ve recently had ours done, shifting furniture from one bedroom to another. It was well worth it but we’ve lived here for 26 years and only done it in bits ourselves in the past, so a week of chaos was fun! Everything painted, ceilings, woodwork and walls.
