Anyone here know about radiotherapy?

I've got a few questions. Can you be given radio twice a week? It seems a bit much to me but I don't know anything about it. Also, I hear you can be given 'aprons' that cover different body parts. Is it possible to get radio burns under the aprons? Perhaps in 4 or 5 different body areas?

DP is due to start radiotherapy soon, he has just got his treatment plan. He will be having radio therapy every day mon-Friday. On one day he is having 2 radiotherapy sessions in one say, a session in the morning and a session in the afternoon, due to the bank holiday.

Mon-Friday for a period of for 6 weeks.

My DM had it every day for 10 days. Brain and lung.

Wow that's rough. I had no idea.

Some people have 5 days a week, some 3 or less, it is all tailored to the exact cancer. Equally some will have one dose (we call them fractions), some 25 or 30.
The radiotherapy is directed by the machine and only the area the doctor has decided needs treatment will be treated - the machine will move round to give the therapy from different angles so it is all focussed at the treatment area. Shielding aprons aren't a thing, maybe the person means the positioning bags which are used to make sure the person lies in the same place each time. You can get sore areas on the skin in different places as the radiation beam goes in and comes out from the different angles though.

Ahh, thanks for explaining @CMOTDibbler

I had it for 10 days. Mon-Fri for breast cancer for 2 weeks. After the initial mark up its very straight forward. 10 mins max? I did have a lot of sore/broken skin afterwards. Soft bras and sudocream fixed it.

Dh had it for brain cancer, 5 days a week for six weeks, dosage and position were very tightly calibrated and he had a mask made for him to keep his head in exactly the right position.

The person is pretty much immobile for the session and the machine moves around them, but the sessions are very quick, you can be in and out in under 20 mins.

DH had a daily session, five days a week for 6 weeks, precision targeted at the cancer in his prostate gland. No skin burns, but feeling pretty tired by the end of it. A combination of radiotherapy and hormone therapy worked. He's now in full remission and fighting fit.
