Would you correct someone who always misspells your name in emails?

I don't know this person but I'm arranging work with them on behalf of a company I freelance for. So we've had 6 or 7 emails so far and more to come whilst this work carries through to completion.

They're not my client though so I don't wish to be rude but it's driving me mad

My name is easily confused with another so think Julie/ Julia or Sara/Sarah type thing

But it's driving me mad.

Do I just grin and bear it or correct her? And if I correct her, how to do it politely?

Yes

BatFaceOwl · 13/03/2023 17:20

@Emmamoo89 which one?

OP posts:
froomeonthebroom · 13/03/2023 17:22

Definitely correct her. This happens to me all the time so I always pay extra attention to how people spell their names.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 13/03/2023 17:24

I'm always called by my surname - it's a different spelling of a female name. People see my first name and surname (both female names) and automatically call me by my surname.

I reply by calling them by their surname.

Sprig1 · 13/03/2023 17:24

Of course, why wouldn't you? It isn't rude. Just say, by the way it is Jane not Jayne.

WhyIsBogdanSexy · 13/03/2023 17:24

Honestly I tend not to bother. My name is incorrect all the time, or just randomly shortened to a variety of nicknames I've never used.

I don't let it bother me. Just keep signing off my emails as normal and maybe one day they'll read it properly. Life's too short.

I do try to pay attention to other people's names and get them correct.

mynameiscalypso · 13/03/2023 17:25

I ignore it personally. I have a name where there are multiple spellings and I can't be bothered to care really which one people use

Sunriseinwonderland · 13/03/2023 17:27

People get my name wrong all the time. Think e on the end instead of a. Last time I sent an email back saying who is Sunrise and got an apology in return.
It was someone I've worked with for three years who should know better.

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 13/03/2023 17:27

A breezy, 'by the way, before we've known each other so long it gets awkward, I'm a Sarah not a Sara'. Added into an email that's no big deal.

Ragwort · 13/03/2023 17:27

Agree - my name is frequently misspelled... really doesn't bother me.

BatFaceOwl · 13/03/2023 17:28

There aren't any other spellings of my name so it isn't a Carole / Carol type thing

The difference in the letter makes it a different name, albeit close!

I do want to ignore it but it actually gives me the rage 😀

I email a lot of people who have names I have not heard before. I always take great pains to to ensure I've got it right

My name is misspelled all the time but it doesn't bother me. I think it's quite lazy not to check someone's name is correct before sending them an email, but I don't give it any more thought than that.

MissEira · 13/03/2023 17:38

I have that problem with my daughter. Someone messages me and writes “Oh happy birthday to your girl! Did Julie enjoy her party?”
I would just reply with DDs real name: “Yes it was great, JULIA really enjoyed it!”

First i just put the correct name, next time in all caps.. But tbh its always the same people and they still spell it wrong, so it isnt helping 😂

iklboo · 13/03/2023 17:39

I've given up. FIL & his wife call me the wrong name entirely. I've known them 24 years.

Natty13 · 13/03/2023 17:56

I get this. I'm not British so adding "also just FYI my name is Julia not Julie. Best wishes, Julia" is something I don't give a second thought to.

DutchCowgirl · 13/03/2023 18:20

In my team I have several cases of peopje having the same name but with a different spelling. Like a Julia and a Julya. And it drives me crazy. I’m always making the same mistakes over and over again and people keep correcting me…. but I don’t think i’ll ever learn.

Littleoxforddictionary · 13/03/2023 18:27

My second name is misspelt 50% of the time. It means I often don't get emails, which is not my problem and I don't correct that. But I do correct the misspelling of my first name, I always reply 'my name is not Julie, it's julia'. As it is right there in front of the writer of an email I can be a bit blunt I feel.

Doingmybest12 · 13/03/2023 18:37

My name has several spellings and shortened versions. I don' t bother to correct. When asked how do I spell my name I often get irritated as I think it really doesn't matter to the transaction but I know they are being correct and diligent. I try and say it ahead of time as I introduce myself if names are being written down. Sometimes I am in a rush and make a typo on my own name signing off and send it anyway.

LlynTegid · 13/03/2023 18:42

Yes you should. May not bother you but you could be saving someone else from this carelessness or laziness.

saveforthat · 13/03/2023 18:42

There are two spellings of my name. It drives me mad when people get it wrong because the correct spelling is in my email address. I always correct them.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 13/03/2023 19:29

I reply by calling them by their surname. ha ha, brilliant! My name has lots of variations, but I just reply with the correct spelling, emphasising it by just using my name, not the full auto-signature. If they aren't too thick it sinks in!

Muddays · 14/03/2023 02:33

Of course you correct her! If she can't get your name right after 7plus emails are you sure you want to risk arranging work for someone who lacks a basic professional skill with a company that trusts you? As a former editor (long time ago) it was absolutely essential that any potential employee of mine was very aware of the basic etiquette regarding the correct spelling of names. I'm surprised you're so sensitive about this issue. Tell her straight "I know that there are various spellings of my name and you're not the first or probably the last to get it wrong; but I would appreciate it if you spelled it blah blah. Thank you." Done. If she then spells it wrong I would start calling her Gary.

dudsville · 14/03/2023 02:36

I don't correct people who get my name wrong, but I note it. It informs me.

RobertsRadio · 14/03/2023 02:54

I sometimes used to get people deciding to arbitrarily shorten my name when replying to emails, despite me always using my full name, eg them replying to Dear Sam, instead of Samantha. I would then reply that I was very sorry but thought they had emailed me in error mistaking me for someone else as I was Samantha Jones, not Sam Jones and moreover there was no Sam Jones working in my department; I was always very polite and very keen to be seen as helpful. Most got the point immediately and used my full name afterwards.

I reply by calling them by their surname.

Pre marriage I had a female first name as a surname and was often called it as my first name. I usually let it slide.
