Help needed for DC who will (hopefully) have a Music (performance) degree in a few months but has no idea what jobs to be looking for or, indeed, what area they want to work in. Realistically they feel the chances of playing their instrument professionally are slim - we’re talking pop rather than classical etc. Has no idea what field to be looking towards, advice from the Uni is to network and something will come along. Easier said than done. Is not in favour of more education but might be talked round if something really appeals. Doesn’t want to teach, do music therapy or anything like that. Would like something in ‘the industry’ but competition is fierce.

Anyway, I said I’d ask on here to see what any Mumsnetter’s kids have done with their degrees.

Thanks!

A friend of mine who did a music degree teaches instruments privately.

Friends and family with music degrees (although admittedly classic instruments not pop) do social work, events management, accountancy and one is a primary teaching assistance who does some bits of performing and music teaching but has never managed to get a permanent post in an orchestra or choir.

Oh goodness, so many replies - thank you all. I’ve just come in so have only skimmed them tonight but shall read them slowly tomorrow when I get some time. I’m not surprised so many have jobs outside of the music industry, I think it’s what I expected and worried about, but hope dc can somehow find something they enjoy within the music field - looks like there’s quite a bit to explore/think about but will come back tomorrow when I can keep my eyes open! Thanks again.

I know several young people with music degrees, 3 are primary teachers, 1 secondary, 2 struggling to earn enough playing (classical) and alas one had complete breakdown through the covid times and is in residential care. Dd hasn't graduated yet but is thinking music therapy or preschool music

A close friend of mine does and he was a supply teacher for a while and now works on cruise ships

Secondary music teacher for about 6 years. Now have a completely un-music-related job.
