Am I entitled to have a copy of my test results?

I had a colonoscopy about 10 years ago

I remember they found polyps. I was only 19, and as I came around from the sedation I couldn't pay attention to what they said.
I am now having some bowel issues and called my old doctors to ask for a copy of this so I had some information for my new doctor.

The receptionist said he can only give it if the new doctor requests it.

I thought I was entitled to this information. Can anyone advise me please.

They always have to check with the doctor first so the receptionist was just following the correct procedure.

It’s Because in some rare cases, doctors are allowed to withhold information , for example if they think it might damage your mental health.

It sounds like that’s not an issue in your situation so no doubt you will get the results soon.

Also Gp notes are supposed to go to the new practice, but often the system is very VERY slow. Make sure you’ve given them all your of
addresses , any changes of name and your NHS number if you know it.

I hope you get your problems sorted soon.

You can request a copy of your medical records at any time. You might have to fill out a form to request it, and may take the records office a few weeks to make copies and post it to you, but you're absolutely entitled to see the info.

Phone the hospital who did the op and ask to make a request for your hospital notes. I think you can also see your GP records via the NHS app.

You can submit a dsar to the old doctor for a copy of your personal data ie.medical records.

As for the above posters - however one small caveat. Doctors & hospitals are only required to keep medical records for 7 years post treatment, so it may be possible the files have been destroyed - unlikely but possible.

It will be in your medical records that are at your current doctors. I don’t think your old surgery could even access them now. It’s your current surgery you need to request it from. There may be a charge.
