Did I really undo two months of dieting?

Hi. I’m so demoralised. I’ve been dieting since January 1st. It’s been slow going but I’ve averaged out at 1lb a week - so I’ve lost 12lbs in total.
DH and I had a child free night Saturday. First in literal years. So we booked fancy hotel. Had afternoon tea, and 3 course meal. I didn’t pig out and actually commented that my appetite might have shrunk a bit because of my dieting.
Sunday morning I had hotel brekkie. Then nothing until a chicken curry and rice from our local takeaway last night. We also drank alcohol - I had 3 fruit cocktails and then some vodka and slimline tonics.
weighed myself this morning and I am EIGHT pounds heavier than I was on Friday morning.
I could cry.

Its water. Go back to doing what you were doing and weigh yourself in a fortnight.

Do you know how much you have to actually eat in calories to put on 8lbs??!!!

Sparklfairy · 13/03/2023 10:55

Honestly don't worry. To put on 8lbs of fat would have to mean you'd overeaten by 28,000 calories - which you obviously didn't so don't be disheartened!

This happens to me all the time, half a stone fluctuations especially in women with cycles and hormones is perfectly normal. Drink some extra water today and look forward to nice 'loss' in a few days!

Sparklfairy · 13/03/2023 10:56

Garbled that last bit - I meant half a stone can be normal for me at times!

WhyIRayLiotta · 13/03/2023 11:03

OMG 28 thousand calories - I really did not overeat that much!
It’s so annoying how crappy and self conscious I feel today because of the damn numbers on the scale.

How is it 2023 and people still think they can put that much fat on over one weekend? It's just bloat.

I used to weigh myself every day and I remember one day getting on and it was 10lbs more than the day before!

Its quite incredible.

WhyIRayLiotta · 13/03/2023 11:09

Hi Scalottia, i didn’t, I’m just massively demoralised by the numbers on the scale and wanted to moan about it.

Look at it rationally. It's impossible to put on that much fat from a day or so of eating a bit more than normal.

If you generously estimate the calories it will account for a pound or two of fat at most:

Had afternoon tea, 2000 calories
and 3 course meal. 3000
Sunday morning I had hotel brekkie. 2000
Then nothing until a chicken curry and rice from our local takeaway last night. 2000
I had 3 fruit cocktails 2000 each? 600
and then some vodka and slimline tonics. 500

So perhaps about 10000 calories in two days, probably less, instead of your normal 4000, so maybe about a pound or two of fat gain maximum and the rest will be bloating due to all the extra fat, sugar and salt. Possibly combined with pre-menstrual bloating?

livingthegoodlife · 13/03/2023 11:35

I could have written this exact post. Also lost about a pound a week. Had a weekend off, ate a whole pizza, drank a few beers etc now up! Argh.

Hoping the other posters are correct and it's just water/bloat.

Your weekend sounds amazing - don't let the weight ruin it!

WhyIRayLiotta · 13/03/2023 12:35

Thanks @livingthegoodlife The weekend was fab- totally worth it!

I weigh myself every day. Not unusual to put on 5-8lbs after a takeaway especially. It's gone within two days.

VictoriaBun · 13/03/2023 12:42

Google Glycogen and have a read.
The loss of your Glycogen levels on the first week or two is what gives you the biggest loss.
Give it a week and you will probably be back to near where you were.

Lottapianos · 13/03/2023 12:42

It's hugely important to have periods where you eat and drink with a focus on fun, rather than just nutrition. You're doing fine. How would you feel about ditching the scales and the numbers and instead focus on how you feel - fitter, trimmer, more energy, boost in self esteem etc?

WhyIRayLiotta · 13/03/2023 14:37

Thanks @Lottapianos I think I might have to do that. I really feel crap about myself today, all self conscious. I had been feeling great with my weight loss - it’s such a confidence boost to feel better in my skin. But today I am back to square one and it’s probably silly to be as annoyed by the number as I have been.

That happens to me every time I've a weekend of socialising, it takes a week of being back in routine and I'm back to where I started.
Try to find some new recipes that are within your healthy eating plan this week to get you back interested in it again and you'll be back on track in no time!

Lottapianos · 13/03/2023 15:19

'it’s such a confidence boost to feel better in my skin'

So stick with that feeling. I honestly think the numbers just cloud the issue and vary so much anyway due to a range of factors. You had a couple of days of indulgence, and hopefully enjoyed the hell out of them! Now just get back on the bus - no punishing, or berating, or starving yourself, or giving yourself a hard time. Just get back to your normal diet and exercise plan
