Is my puffy face because of middle age?

I'm 43 btw. I was on a zoom call last week and couldn't stop looking at my own face - in a bad way! I've put on a few pounds recently and my face is looking rounder, but it's started looking puffy and my eyes are looking smaller.

I had my hormones checked by the GP recently and all came back as normal, and periods are still like clockwork, so not sure if it's menopause related. Is it just aging? Can you prevent this?

Weight gain could contribute to it tbh. alcohol always left me puffy with small eyes once I was in my 40’s, even if I was only drinking a couple of times a week I seemed permanently puffy.
Menopause shrank my face and just made it sag!

Bookmarking because I have this problem as well. I hate it.

Alcohol definitely. I only have a small glass of wine on wkends now and uts improved.

Also, drink plenty of water and see if it helps after a week

I already drink loads of water - at least 3L per day. But I do drink wine also ... Blush

How long does it take for the cutting down on alcohol to have an effect?

I think you start to see an effect from giving up wine after a couple of days, tbh!

I drink wine at weekends and always look terrible on a Monday morning, but if I drink plenty water, get some sleep and use my good moisturiser, by Weds I start to look better and not puffy. If I go a couple of weeks without my face looks slimmer, but I think that’s just an overall bit of weight lost from the calories, rathe than the alcohol, iyswim

Put the laptop camera much higher up, instant de puffying

FrownedUpon · 13/03/2023 10:07

I don’t know, but I gave up alcohol a year ago & still look puffy. I think for me it’s just age. It’s very frustrating.

Trixiefirecracker · 13/03/2023 10:09

I have one of those roller things! Can’t think of the name but that’s helped. Will try and find link.

RudsyFarmer · 13/03/2023 10:11

I would see that as lifestyle rather than age. I don’t drink but I no too many refined carbs/sugar makes me puffy.

RudsyFarmer · 13/03/2023 10:11

Know

PillBoxes · 13/03/2023 10:12

Possibly too much water there, we don't need 3 litres of just water a day and too much can lead to other issues like hyponatraemia. This is especially true as a lot of water intake also comes from tea/coffee/juice and actual foods.

Maybe reduce water intake a little gradually and see if that helps.

I know when I eat wheaty or bready things my whole body swells up including my face

Toddlerteaplease · 13/03/2023 10:44

I noticed this last week as well. I've not put on weight. I'm 41.

Goawaypeppa · 13/03/2023 10:45

Alcohol and sugar.

I also used to have a puffy face before I was diagnosed with celiac disease two years ago - stopped eating wheat and processed food (only because GF processed food is shit and expensive, not because I’m a saint), and it went.

Im 43 too.

gettingolderr · 13/03/2023 11:19

Interesting. I'm really healthy and never eat ultra processed foods, but I do drink wine and drink coffee. I have also had a bit of sourdough bread recently whereas normally I avoid bread so maybe all things have contributed.

I don't eat wheat at all, or drink more than an occasional glass of wine, and my face isn't puffy - late 50s. I have plenty of other bad habits so i think it's probably bread

70sDuvet · 13/03/2023 20:40

I haven't had alcohol in over 18 months due to a medication im taking, its made no difference to the puffiness or texture of my skin. Which is pants, as I thought there were be at least some ethereal goddess to shine through once I'd given up the gin.

Maraschina · 13/03/2023 20:45

Alcohol and salt, age and sleep, the list is endless. IF you find a solution, let us know!

Ohthejoyous · 13/03/2023 21:20

Have you changed your skincare?. I started to get puffy eyes and I realised I was allergic to my eyemakeup remover.

MultipleVeganPies · 13/03/2023 21:28

Yes I also get puffy eyes from allergies (to certain cosmetics)

But the biggest thing is alcohol

You can often tell by middle age if people are regular consumers of alcohol by their puffy face and also bloated belly...

Alcohol really does a number on you
