Calling all our French mumsnetters....

I follow a French mayor on Instagram who posted these photos on his Instagram story. The yellow leaflet is the current version in the town hall, and I'm presuming (based on my limited french) that the dark blue leaflet is what he wants to change it to. He is mayor of a large town close to a popular city in France. AIBU to be shocked at how outdated these views are? Are these views normal amongst the French population? Or is it google translating it too literally?

All views welcome. Smile

Isn’t it asking that any compliments directed at a woman should be regarding her work rather than her appearance?

I think you might be misreading it. For me, the 'original' yellow text puts the blame on the woman - that it's her clothing and behaviour that lead to harassment. Those things have been scratched out on the yellow one to indicate that the way to eliminate harassment is quite simply...not to harass. So a progressive edit of the original message. The blue ones carry on in the same way - rather than commenting on my legs, my clothes, my cleavage, my walk - why don't you comment on my work? 46% of women claim to have been subjected to sexist attitudes at work - professional equality requires work/we all need to work for professional equality.

In other words, all of the messages are progressive ones targeting harassment in the workplace. Don't think you have to worry about your mayor OP!

Thanks for the explanation. It makes perfect sense now that that's what it means. I think I took the google translation too literally! I had thought the yellow leaflet was actually blaming women for their choices so I was really confused. Thanks again Smile

I'm not convinced that the yellow one was ever a genuine poster, but there is certainly the attitude that women and girls shouldn't provoke, and there is a backlash at the moment to say that the problem is the men not the women.

An example is that my daughter isn't allowed to wear shorts or anything that exposes her shoulder or belly button at lycée incase the boys get aroused but no such rules exist for the boys.

The MPs have similar rules.

The current message is that we need to educate the sons not the daughters.

Well they are crossed out and the one option left and that does stand out is don't harass.

Was coming on to say precisely this. They all follow a theme and a pretty supportive.
