Accused of stealing a bag for life

I went to my local supermarket this afternoon to pick up a few bits and pieces. We’re in a big city and I’m in there almost every day. There’s only one checkout with a person working it; the rest are self-checkouts.

I got chosen for a random check. No drama, it happens a lot. Then I was told I hadn’t scanned my bag for life. No , I said, it’s mine. I just took it out of my pocket. The woman repeated that I hadn’t scanned it, and I repeated that it was mine and had just come out of my pocket. She called a supervisor and they told me to wait.
A few minutes later the supervisor came back, and the first woman said (without looking at me), “You can go”. Nothing was said about what had happened but I assume they reviewed security tape or something and saw that yes, my bag had in fact come out of my own pocket.

I pointed out that they had been quite rude and was pointedly ignored. I was shaking. I’m shy in public at the best of times and I really didn’t know what was going on or what was going to happen. I mean, you wouldn’t expect they’d call the cops over a bag for life but I had no way of proving I hadn’t stolen it. They were, if anything, even more rude once they said I could go.

What should I do? I’m honestly quite scared to go back. None of the usual staff seemed to be working today (I’ve been in there perhaps every second day for over a decade, quite a few of them know me by sight.) But it’s my local shop…

(By the way I am well aware that regulars steal things too, and I have no issue with being checked. The attitude, though, was awful. When I questioned it I was basically told to leave the shop now please madam!)

@MindfulMess

carry a carrier bag from a different shop

and complain about their rudeness

Great suggestion thanks, I'll do that next time!

Well it would certainly cut down on the food bills in a cost of living crises.

CalpolDependant · 13/03/2023 07:31

I am genuinely surprised to learn so many people brazenly pinch bags for life 😂

I always pay for mine. It’s my penance for forgetting my bag. Forgive me, planet Earth, for I have sinned.

OP, I would email a complaint to the head office. You’ve said that you didn’t have a problem with them checking, but the rudeness was unacceptable- you need to tell them this!

If it makes you feel any better, they are probably really embarrassed and that’s why they didn’t acknowledge you.

This, OP.

stinkfaceison · 13/03/2023 07:41

When I worked in retail i witnessed many time people take a bag and not pay . I did nothing because it wasn't worth the Aggro over a 5p carrier when they probably had paid £20 plus for their shopping.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 12/03/2023 19:48

You could write swear words inside all your bags. So if they stop you again you can say in your best Hyacinth Bucket voice 'This is my bag, you'll see it has cuntychops written on it.'

Yes! 😁

Oblomov23 · 13/03/2023 07:52

Grin Hyacinth. Thinking of writing on mine. Not swear words but something. I have say 6 in the boot of my car.

babasaclover · 13/03/2023 08:07

Bluearc77 · 12/03/2023 18:55

Gosh, I don't ever pay for my carrier bags, I just press no bags and take one!

Sounds like a thoroughly unpleasant experience. Just try not to let it upset you anymore than it already has. You did nothing wrong (unlike me!).

Me too and zero fucks given. I have my own in boot but if I'm walking and pop in etc yeah fuck it 🤣🤣🤣. I do recycle them though

xsquared · 13/03/2023 08:14

To the posters who don't pay for their bags,
Have you ever been caught? What would you do if you were?

Not really worth the humiliation over the sake of 30p.

Oldnproud · 13/03/2023 08:15

MindfulMess · 12/03/2023 19:29

I think I’d only used it once. More fool me!

I hadn’t paid yet so I was kinda waiting to pay, I suppose I could have left without my shopping but it was all packed up in my own bag 😂😂 Also I was a bit confused, they weren’t clear at all about anything, just rude.

drip feed you won’t believe this but when I got home and looked at my receipt, I’d been charged for a bag as well. I think she added it on when doing the check. It was my fucking bag!!!

So yes, I was treated rudely, and then they stole 30p from me under false pretences and asked me to leave the shop! You couldn’t make it up 😂😂

I am absolutely fuming on your behalf, OP.

So, first they wrongly and rudely detain you because they think you are stealing a bag. Then secondly, if they did, as you think, scan the bag themselves without your knowledge, they 'steal' 30p from you. It sounds like a non-physical mugging!

Nowadays, I like to think that in your position I would have held my ground and insisted on them sending for the manager, to see what they had to say about it. However, I certainly wouldn't have had the confidence to do that when I was younger.

Anyway, you werent even aware that you had been charged for a bag until you got home.

In your position now, I would definitely make an official complaint to the manager. I would send them an email giving a clear account of exactly what happened, how badly and rudely it was handled and how awful the incident left you feeling, and would also say that you felt that you had been robbed because they took money from you without either your knowledge or your consent.

At the very least, I would expect a full and proper apology from the manager. If I only got a half-hearted one, along the lines of 'they were only doing their job', then I would be tempted to name and shame them by getting a local newspaper involved.

Justmeandthedog1 · 13/03/2023 08:24

Scribble, write your name or your postcode inside your own bag, then they’ll know it’s not new. I’d have thought if it’s been pre-used and folded in your pocket it was obvious it wasn’t one of theirs.
I’d also contact head office and point out how rude the staff were. What was wrong with sorry madam, our mistake?

Meh. Capitalism is a theif, stealing from tesco is a victimless crime.

Try that one on the judge, see how far it gets you.

lieselotte · 12/03/2023 19:49

I was followed by a security guard round Boots at Waterloo station last week.

He followed me up and down two aisles - I had just got to the point where I was going to say something but he either noticed I'd noticed him, or decided someone else looked more "shoplifty" than I did.

That happened to an Asian friend of mine. She was so narked she didn't point out to him the blatant (white) shoplifter that he had missed.

Dayvi · 13/03/2023 08:48

I don't think the theft of a plastic bag would meet the CPS threshold.

Rosula · 13/03/2023 08:49

outwiththeoldinwiththenewish · 12/03/2023 21:06

A bit embarrassing, sure, but I think you're overreacting, why would you be scared to go back?
I've had a whole trolley load rescanned because my daughter put something in it without self-scanning! Not a nice experience, but one of those things. Don't give it anymore headspace.

Read OP's message. She had no problem with her stuff being rescanned. Unsurprisingly, she does have a problem with being accused of stealing something.

Absolutely. 30p once a month or £120 once a week, no difference is there!

BurglarAndSwag · 13/03/2023 09:02

I am constantly targeted but then I am wearing a black and white striped top and a mask.

However I would never steal a 'Bag for Life' mainly because Freddie the Fence won't take them anymore.

Rosula · 13/03/2023 09:06

Stealing plastic bags is really quite pathetic. Why risk the humiliation for the sake of saving 30p?

Look at the quote history. That was in response to the person that said stealing from Tesco's wasn't theft, so it didn't relate to taking a bag - it related to stealing full stop. After all, if you think stealing from Tesco's is OK, presumably you won't hesitate to nick a coat, a phone and few bottles of champagne.

xsquared · 13/03/2023 09:13

Bluearc77 · 13/03/2023 09:08

I'd say, woopsie, my bad and be on my way!

You'd only get away with that once in the same shop though.

Honestly, just keep a stash in your car when you go to do your big shop or accept the very small price of forgetting them, when you're in store.

Stealing is stealing whether it's 30p or £30. People like you are the reason for what happened to OP.p
