Accused of stealing a bag for life

I went to my local supermarket this afternoon to pick up a few bits and pieces. We’re in a big city and I’m in there almost every day. There’s only one checkout with a person working it; the rest are self-checkouts.

I got chosen for a random check. No drama, it happens a lot. Then I was told I hadn’t scanned my bag for life. No , I said, it’s mine. I just took it out of my pocket. The woman repeated that I hadn’t scanned it, and I repeated that it was mine and had just come out of my pocket. She called a supervisor and they told me to wait.
A few minutes later the supervisor came back, and the first woman said (without looking at me), “You can go”. Nothing was said about what had happened but I assume they reviewed security tape or something and saw that yes, my bag had in fact come out of my own pocket.

I pointed out that they had been quite rude and was pointedly ignored. I was shaking. I’m shy in public at the best of times and I really didn’t know what was going on or what was going to happen. I mean, you wouldn’t expect they’d call the cops over a bag for life but I had no way of proving I hadn’t stolen it. They were, if anything, even more rude once they said I could go.

What should I do? I’m honestly quite scared to go back. None of the usual staff seemed to be working today (I’ve been in there perhaps every second day for over a decade, quite a few of them know me by sight.) But it’s my local shop…

(By the way I am well aware that regulars steal things too, and I have no issue with being checked. The attitude, though, was awful. When I questioned it I was basically told to leave the shop now please madam!)

Meh. Capitalism is a theif, stealing from tesco is a victimless crime.

Except because of chronic thievery from people like you, people like the OP face accusations from sensitised and overworked retail staff, and we all face higher prices.

so no, shoplifting isn’t a victimless crime.

at least admit that you’re selfish and don’t give a shit about the consequences to others

Hope you don't complain when prices go up

Only on MN could people work themselves up into a tizzy about a plastic bag.c

And in my local supermarket. Which was how this started.

‘Tizzy’ is very patronising.

Posters are just pointing out that theft is theft 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dayvi · 12/03/2023 19:32

The anger is rising. It's close to explosion. Bloody bag thieves. 🥷😲😂

LucyLeave · 12/03/2023 19:32

This is a good old fashioned MN thread. Reminds me of the eating grapes in the supermarket thread from the olden days.

I had a similar experience when buying a baby outfit in a big Tesco. It was a shorts and t-shirt set that had been reduced to £4 in the sale- I scanned it at a self-checkout, paid and didn't request a receipt (I had no intention of returning it and it was only £4 anyway).

After walking away from the self-checkout I realised that it had a security tag on it so asked a member of staff to remove it. He asked for my receipt and I explained that I didn't ask for one to be printed. He then wanted me to show him the exact checkout (out of about 15-20) that I used... I had no idea! It was rammo in there and every screen was being used. He then walked off with my purchase and went and got a manager. Like the OP, I was left waiting not knowing what was going on. The manager asked for my Clubcard... luckily I had scanned this when I bought the outfit! He then somehow used this to track down proof that I had paid. Without a word he removed the tag, passed the clothing over his shoulder to me and walked off! Bloody rude and making me feel like a criminal when I was a genuine paying customer. The checkouts don't even automatically print a receipt, you have to press 'yes' if you want one, it wasn't like I was spinning a story. I was furious when I left that store.

Absolutely shocked and appalled.

Needmorelego · 12/03/2023 19:33

@EscapeRoomToTheSun do you mean me is moron or blue-the-bag-thief?
I used to work in a major high st retailer (this was the days before you had to charge for carrier bags). We used to go through 1000s of the ruddy things in a week. People would insist on a bag when buying a single Mars bar.
The company who manufacturered the bags didn't give them to the retailer for free did they? The company had to purchase them. Must have been costing them an absolute fortune.

LucyLeave · 12/03/2023 19:34

I'm discusted.

Needmorelego · 12/03/2023 19:35

@MindfulMess sorry... I'm a derailer too.

Yabu because you're massively over reacting. They made a mistake, you told them that, no big deal.

Go in tomorrow wearing a bag as a hat.

This just made me laugh out loud, the thought of a customer wearing a 30p bag for life over their head, with eye holes! Grin

Yes. Shopping from Tesco is the crime. People who don't shop ethically are causing horrific suffering and damage.
Of course it's not always possible to shop ethically and survive if you're not well off, so stealing instead of paying to damage people, communities and the environment is at least the more moral option.
I just don't do it because I'd worry about being caught and because I only have a Waitrose in walking distance anyway!

HaveTheDayOff · 12/03/2023 19:37

They were rude. If you’re worried about going back you could take a general tote bag or a bag from another supermarket. At least that way you know they can’t accuse you again.

It isnt stealing from tesco though is it?

Bags are purposely prohibitively expensive for a very specific reason which is aimed at the the long term benefit all of us. It will be our children that are the victims if we dont all make the effort, take small steps to get our plastic use under control.

Dayvi · 12/03/2023 19:40

You should have written your name on the bag. In big letters.

abandonedmadem · 12/03/2023 19:40

the bags used to be free... I'm sure they put a price on to stop people from forgetting their own.
like an eco friendly move?

whereaw · 12/03/2023 19:41

Personally I'd be speaking to the store manager to complain and let them know how it made you feel. Tell them this is your local store and how often you shop there. I would be making clear that you want to give the manager the opportunity to

It was an attempt to do this I think. People often just factor in the cost of a bag now. or steal one At least the bags are better quality now though.

whereaw · 12/03/2023 19:43

...rectify the situation before you take it elsewhere.
As a loyal customer they should be not only apologising but doing something concrete to say sorry as a goodwill gesture.

GlassBunion · 12/03/2023 19:44

These folk proudly announcing that they never pay for bags; what else do you do? Scan one pepper but take two? Scan a cheap bunch of flowers but take a more expensive one?
