Landlord selling property

So I received a text from my landlord informing me he has no option but to sell the house I have rented for the past 13 years due to financial reasons. I am a single part to 18yo son and 15yo daughter, both still in education. I work, but am unable to afford the price of rent now which is at least £400-£500 above what I currently pay. What are my options? I will contact the council but right now I am so worried about what is going to happen. I have pets too which makes it even more tricky. What sort of temporary accommodation could I end up in? And for how long? Will I even be classed as high priority with older children?
Any advice from anyone with similar experience will be appreciated.

@lollipoprainbow
sorry to hear you are in the same situation, it’s so stressful isn’t it. I do hope everything works out for you, I feel your pain- literally. If I manage to get more info or have any advice in the coming weeks/months I will let you know

My family with 4 children 2 with SEN were served a section 21 last summer.They had lived there for 11 years.Same situation landlord selling.When you receive the section 21 ring the housing dept and register.You will be offered emergency housing this can be a.B and b Travel lodge or hostel if you are lucky.My family didn’t know where this was until the night before.All belongings into storage having sold or donated in the 8 weeks prior.This was a terrible time.New schools for the 4 children including uniform the hostel was miles away from where they were living..The cats were looked after by a charity until they were rehoused.The other pets were rehomed breaking the children’s hearts.The hostel was self contained but 2 bedrooms for 6 people.They are now rehomed and children are once again in new schools.The cats are with them now and the awful time is over.This is the Cotswolds.Good luck.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz shitty thing to do

It's literally what Shelter will advise. She cannot make herself intentionally homeless.

It may be what she has to do.

Some councils (in fact many) won’t help someone until they are evicted.

Its something LL’s have to take into account. For example I know that my tenants wouldn’t be in a position to leave so I would have to take into account the councils position (here luckily they’ll help people as soon as they get a court date in) if I decided to serve notice.

It’s part of being a LL.

Thank you all, if I have to go down that route then unfortunately for my landlord that is what I will have to do as much as the thought of doing so really doesn’t sit right with me. I’m sure he will understand although not ideal for him.

It’s the risk landlords take (and i say that as one who had to spend a lot of money once doing it for a nightmare tenant).

do make sure you speak to your council and get very specific advice.

If you so the wrong thing at the wrong time it can cost you their help. Shelter and the likes are great for general advice, but you need to know what local policy is and how to access help and when

good luck

Op,
Have you any family who can help you? Even if they can't house you could they have the pets until you find somewhere?

Shell8608 · 13/03/2023 11:54

Yes , have somewhere for the pets if and when the time comes. Council have said what many people have told me- he will have to get a repossession order, he has not yet gave me official notice once he does I will have a meeting with the council, they will check that the notice is valid if there’s any discrepancies he will have to do a new one and the 2 months notice will start again. The whole process can take 8-9 months, I have to stay here the whole time can try to get property within that time but if I leave I could be seen as making myself intentionally homeless. Will find out more once official notice is served and I have a meeting. Thanks all

Hi there,
Ive just had the same thing happen to me. We have lived here for 18yrs and now the landlord is selling. We also can not afford today’s rent prices. Did it all work out for you in the end? X

Shell8608 · 11/12/2023 12:01

Sorry to hear that, no update at all I am still here paying the same amount of rent with no S21 served!! He tried to say an estate agent who will be putting the house on the market served it (I rent direct through him so not sure what he’s on about there) back in may I contacted him and he said I had to be out in 2 weeks obviously that wasn’t happening and I have heard nothing since!! Still look for private rentals every day but no luck there, the initial stress is over and my attitude is now what will be, will be. Good luck with it all but please don’t over stress and lose sleep because the reality is there is nothing you can do about any of it and you may end up like me 9 months later and I haven’t got a clue what’s going on but I will not contact him about it that’s on his head I still make sure I pay my rent on time every month.

Thats so odd. Has your landlord changed hus mind ? It can't be done without a section 21 then possession order. Hope you get sorted
