Occasional stammer

Hello there

I am in my early forties and have recently, say perhaps the last 5 years noticed that I sometimes stammer.

It’s as if I just can’t spit the word out. For instance, I was telling someone this morning that I had a bad throat. But I must have said the word ‘float’ six times before finally giving up…and I then said it properly.

I speak clearly and don’t speed through my words. I stammer perhaps 4 or 5 times a day at most, so not a lot by any means.

However, it can cause embarrassment. Is this normal? Do others stammer from time to time?

Kindly, is 4 to 5 times a day occasional? That seems rather frequent to me. My experience of stammering (my husband and son) is that they get stuck saying the right word rather than a wrong one. So my husband would get stuck articulating "throat" and get over it by switching to an synonym like "neck". It wouldn't come out as "float".

It's probably just one of those things and I'm sure there are various sorts of stammers. But if your brain is now serving you up the wrong words several times a day, when it didn't use to, it might be worth just asking your GP.

Thank you. I guess I’m not sure it is a stammer then.

I’ll make an appointment. I didn’t want to waste their time that’s all.

I wouldn't leap to that conclusion. I think developmental stammers are different to acquired ones anyway. But with absolutely zero expertise I think several times a day of anything that's bothering you would be worth a GP's time.

Yes I think a stammer is different to your brain giving you the wrong word. I have a colleague who stammers but its always the right word he gets stuck on and like a PPs husband he just comes up with a different word. I think a GP appointment for this is completely reasonable

Mum of a 15 year old with a stammer since he could talk here. Doesn't sound like a stammer to me op and agree with the poster above, I'd get it checked out.

Thank you all. I will do.
