Sleeping. Or not. Peri?

I have always slept well. 7-9 hours a night. Unbroken, beautiful, deep sleep.

However, over the last few months, I have started having sleepless nights. I'll seem to drift off ok, but start to stir within an hour or so. Then I tend to spend most of the night in 'sleep limbo' where I know I'm awake, but not able to fully wake up ( to get a drink or read, etc). Sometimes I am wide awake throughout the whole night. I finally drift off at around 6-7am when it's time to get up.

I'm not particularly worried about anything, and not having rambling thoughts - I just can't nod off. It makes me feel really horrible and groggy the next day.

I am 40. Is this a peri menopause thing? Any advice?

Magnesium. It has been so helpful improving sleep.

@Bumblbeestungmyknee how much?

Shamelessly jumping on thread (sorry OP) as I have awful insomnia at the moment.

Here for any tips!

I'd say possibly. I was 38 when I started with symptoms and insomnia was the worst. I got on hrt at 40 and it's so much better now. Still have the odd night but nothing like it was.

I’m 46 and have just started HRT for this. Since starting progesterone I’m back to sleeping blissfully.

What type of mag do you take?

How often were you having disturbed sleep? Feels a bit ott to treat when it's not frequent - but it's happening more and more. I also wonder if part of it is psychosomatic and I'm 'expecting' to not sleep sometimes..

I'm glad the HRT is helping you. I've just had a full blood panel for unrelated things and everything else looked good. Peri is bitch isn't she!

Probably four nights of seven at first. Eventually it was every night.

MistySkiesAreGone · 12/03/2023 22:26

Liquid melatonin would be my go to. It will be soon if I can't sleep better. 42 here.

Hello, I am wondering whether you were able to find a solution to your insomnia? I am just going through exactly the same thing. Used to be a great sleeper and all of a sudden have a severe insomnia, falling asleep easily but then being up after 1-2 hours and not being able to fall asleep. I am 42, so looks like peri is coming for me 😓

I used to be in bed 10pm-7am as well as a nap in the afternoon in the afternoon if I sat down. Around the time of the menopause all changed and I found I couldn't drop off to sleep. Obviously went through a phase where I felt tired, but moving forward no tiredness, afternoon naps. I'm usually in bed 10.30-11ish- 6.30-7am now - don't sleep that well at all but feel really well in the day.
