People who walk confidently without slipping on snowy/slushy/icey pavements, what are you wearing on your feet?

I'm determined to get on top of this for next winter. I know my basic Decathlon walking boots are not good enough. But I see people in normal heeled boots walking without slipping. I know about those trax things you slip over the soles but I'd just like some really slip proof boots.

Thanks

I use chains, slip them over your boot, order on line. I can walk confidently across thick ice but you have to slip them off before going into a shop as you will skid....

Anything with a thick tread.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 12/03/2023 11:47

I remember watching a doc and they said the more sole that’s in contact with the ground the better. So a smooth sole’s better than a heavy tread. But I just can’t believe this is so!! There must be some physics explanation…

Sorel snow boots - I used to be very nervous about slipping over, not any more 🙂

RedRiverShore3 · 12/03/2023 11:50

DH and I wear Yaktrax but you do have to take them off indoors which means they are a bit impractical if you are popping in and out of shops. but for walking from A to B they are great.

RedRiverShore3 · 12/03/2023 11:52

I think a lot of it is confidence, I'm old so scared of slipping but DS just strides out on his way.

Polkadotties · 12/03/2023 11:54

You have to walk differently as well. Centre of gravity has to be further forward

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/03/2023 11:56

Snow boots. I walk completely normally. You shouldn't need to lean forward?

Skyeheather · 12/03/2023 11:56

Dr Martens, they have more grip than any other shoe I've tried.

Xrays · 12/03/2023 11:57

Dr Martens or proper walking trainers - the ones you get from go outdoors / mountain warehouse type places.

I got these and they turned my shoes into ice skates, I slid around everywhere and there was no grip!

How strange, I've found these absolutely life-changing personally! I've not slipped on the ice at all with these on, perhaps yours are faulty or something.

HollyFern1110 · 12/03/2023 12:03

I think a lot is just walking confidently. I never used to have a problem walking on ice until maybe 10 years ago when I slipped on black ice rushing for a bus & really hurt my back.

I have been so nervous in bad weather ever since & now seem to slip 10 times more than I ever did before - regardless of footwear!

Tescoland · 12/03/2023 12:09

Grippy shoes with lots of crevices will keep you stable. Why do you think they make hiking shoes/boots like that? A totally smooth sole will make you slip in no time.
It’s similar to gliding your hand over something very smooth like a mirror as opposed to something very rugged when you feel the resistance.

Cover your shoes in old pair of thick socks?
been doing that for years…manly to walk to car and back …feel like a plonker these days walking round a town, but as kids in 1970/80s in snowy yorkshire dales weather was pretty normal…except boys took them off so they could skate 🤦‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

Allmyfavouritepeople · 12/03/2023 12:37

Same as pp, covered my walking boots in a pair of old walking socks and suddenly could walk confidently again. The local park I walk my dog in was an ice rink. Don't even really get funny looks if you wear dark coloured socks/everyone is focusing on themselves not falling anyway.

IHeartGeneHunt · 12/03/2023 12:43

King of the Mountain boots from Aldi a couple of winters ago. They're amazing.

If it's just icy and no snow, I've got a pair of men's work shoes from Shoezone. Never slip at all.

DomesticShortHair · 12/03/2023 12:54

Permagrip soles from Timpsons. £19.99.

Are you wearing them inside out?!

Mycatiscrazy · 12/03/2023 13:10

Sorel boots absolutely love them, keep my feet warm and no slipping

Stressybetty · 12/03/2023 13:52

DH bought me some winter Ernie's a few years ago. Jeremy Jones, black leather ankle boots with turquoise spikey sole. They're a bit stiff from lack of wear and a bit too smart really for me.

CrazyBaubles · 12/03/2023 14:06

I went away somewhere snowy for Christmas last year, and as someone who's known for being clumsy, I took Timberland winter boots. Despite lots of walking on snow and ice, I only slipped once (and that's because I wasn't paying attention). Would definitely recommend them.

That's what I do, fuzzy socks are the best, all the little fuzzy bits stick to the ice and give brilliant grip. They get properly manky and ruined but they are brilliant for the odd icy day.
