If you did maths, chemistry and physics A levels what degree and job do you do?

My DD is close to GCSEs and is predicted v good grades in all subjects. She is favouring maths, chemistry and physics A levels (which would have been my worst nightmare when I was at school!) but not sure what to do after that. As well as being academic, she does love to plan, organise and lead so sitting on her own in a lab or churning out statistics may not suit.

Obviously loads of time, but I am an AHP and DH in computers, so no direct experience to draw from. What jobs did you end up doing after studying similar A levels please, DD veers from teaching to dentistry! I want to inspire her when the world is her oyster at the moment.

I did those 3 plus further maths.

Did physics degree.

Trained as a teacher but hated it so didn't actually teach after PGCE.

Became a tax advisor and that's been great. I like it because it's intellectually demanding, and because you're looking at the application of a complex framework of rules to real life situations. Which was why I originally chose physics over maths in the first place: I'm not a theorist and am interested in the practical application.

I was similar. After my Physics degree I went on to do a PGCE, but in hindsight, i was too young with too little life experience and it almost broke me.

I randomly applied for an office job with an airline, when I had my interview, the vibe was just absolutely right. I've progressed somewhat, been there nearly 19 years and absolutely love my job. It's reasonably well paid, covid meant we were able to go to hybrid working, i work hours that fit in with my children, and the perks have been amazing. I've been lucky enough to have holidays I had only ever dreamed of, and a few opportunities to travel for work as well.

It was also exactly what I needed after being beaten down by my PGCE.

DD did those A levels. Will graduate this year with a MORSE degree (maths, operational research, statistics and economics) and starts a graduate scheme with PwC in the autumn leading to chartered accountant qualification.

I did physics a level and bitterly regret it. It was so much tougher than other options. I wish I had done Art or English instead. In my experience my a levels didnt influence my career all that much, they just got me ucas points.

HorribleHisTories15 · 13/03/2023 19:18

I did those as A-levels too with French and then went on to study chemical engineering at uni. Have a Masters and phd.

Have worked in teaching in academia and originally in Oil &Gas, and Pharma .

Snap @DominoRules , I married from my selection too, ha ha ha. Apparently they are crying out for women back in ChemEng. I took a career break after DC1 and DC2, but I didn't find that they were in a desperate hurry to snap women back up again. Have you experienced similar?

illiterato · 13/03/2023 19:22

DH did those. He studied chemical engineering at University but then went into investment banking on a grad scheme and has stayed in that field since.

MrMarkham · 13/03/2023 19:51

I did those plus general studies, and then a degree in ... english. And now I work in finance!

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 13/03/2023 19:55

I did maths, biology and physics A- levels.

I went to uni and did physics (I did a specific type, but there aren't many so it may be quite outing) and then did a masters in engineering (again a rather specific type).

Currently an engineer in what I did my masters in.

Ethelswith · 13/03/2023 19:57

One of my DC did those, plus FM, and didn't know what they wanted to do, so opted for mechanical engineering (as they thought it could leap off in lots of interesting directions)

Another did similar, and chose Comp Sci, and works as a software developer

Dh did those plus Further maths. Did a chemistry degree, doctorate and now is a computer consultant.
I did almost those plus Further maths. Did maths degree and am an office manager.

Novita · 13/03/2023 20:02

Dh did those and is now chemistry professor. That's what he wanted to become.

DominoRules · 13/03/2023 20:10

@HorribleHisTories15 yes very similar hence wanting a change! I’ve been largely part time since DC and have definitely felt overlooked in certain sectors…….
