Starter homes in your area?

Inspired by another thread. How much is a starter home in your area?

I have recently moved to a nice village close to a large city in the South West and even tiny starter homes and coach houses are phenomenally expensive. I moved to be closer to work and to cut down on travel. I also moved to be close to a particular school for DS.

I just did a search on Rightmove and a tiny two bed terrace is £254,950. I have a 17, nearly 18 year old son and I worry about how he will ever afford a mortgage when the time comes. Especially after paying uni fees. I guess there are help to buy schemes and he may buy in partnership with someone else, but it feels like homes are crazy prices.

I myself have a ginormous mortgage of £175,000 left to pay on my home and I’m 42, so it’s not like I will be in a position to help him much either.

Is this standard around the UK? or are there really £50,000 houses to be found as proposed on the other thread?

If it meant a better life for my son, I would be willing to move. Other than work, I have no real ties to the place we live. I am a teacher, so could go elsewhere.

Many thanks.

What does it matter about the prices where you are right now? Your son could end up living somewhere completely different. Or decide buying is not for him. I’m a parent too, so I understand how you’re feeling but their life is yet to be lived.

He’s not even 18, he’s a lot of life still to live. He could end up living in the house next door or the other side of the world.

Very true. I just wondered that’s all.

North Notts here and you could still get something 2 bed for under £100k

I put £50k properties into Rightmove and there are over 100 within 40 miles
Lots of auctions but also some others

jackstini · 12/03/2023 00:00

Make sure he opens a LISA as soon as he is 18 too!

Thank you, I didn’t know what this was, but I’ve had a quick Google and I definitely will get him to do that!

2up 2down terraces near me are generally around £120k but they do come up around £90-£100k sometimes. Within 10 miles there are loads of houses in the £50-£80k ballpark. New builds start at around £170k.
I live in dullsville but it does have reasonable road and rail links and it’s fine if you want a cheap house commutable to nice places where I can’t afford to live. I doubt any of my dc will settle near here.

Mysorehead · 12/03/2023 00:11

Lots of cheap properties where I live, 2 bed flat on Rightmove for offers over 60k (Scotland so offers over System), 2 bed terrace for Offers over 80k.
but there's a reason theyre cheap and I imagine it's the same everywhere where you get cheap houses, it's not a great place to live 😂 lack of everything from job opportunities to healthcare to shops etc and houses are a pain in the arse to sell because again no one wants to buy them!

euff · 12/03/2023 00:11

Within 1 mile from me the cheapest 2 bed terrace is £350k Shock. Ten years ago they would have been 100k less.

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 12/03/2023 00:15

Thanks all. I can’t believe I just googled where Dullsville was lol. I guess that means I best get to bed. I’m going to presume that it gets better the further north you go?
Although my cousin lives in York and I’m sure her house cost a small fortune.

I'm just north of Manchester in a small town with amazing countryside and a 2 up 2 down starts at £40K. I moved from the south coast where our tiny studio in the worst part of town sold for £95k so I know the worries you have. Moving to somewhere affordable changed our lives so much for the better

I want to work to live…and I want that for my son too.

As the first response said, he may do something entirely different anyway. He could decide to jet off to Dubai or meet someone at university and move to her. He could have to move for a specific job. I do understand nothing is guaranteed.

But, I think if we just stay here, then we are going to be living to work forever, so it’s good to at least think about alternatives.

It’s crazy isn’t it?!

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 12/03/2023 00:33

Does anyone think house prices will ever come down? Or will our wages eventually go up to make them seem reasonable again?
Or are affordable homes in certain areas, a thing of the past.

Madness. I couldn’t afford that myself. I don’t even want to think about what a detached house near you would go for.

There are masses of affordable properties in the south west, as you live in a nice village outside of a large city (I’m presuming either Exeter or Bristol) then of course a starter home is going to be more expensive than say, Plymouth for example. You will just have to lower the expectations you have for your sons first house, yes he probably won’t be able to afford a nice village house close to a city as his first home, not many can, doesn’t mean he won’t be able to buy a house at all.

Bearpawk · 12/03/2023 00:48

£300k min for a studio here, £350 ish for a flat , £500 for a tiny house :(

Somanycats · 12/03/2023 00:49

279k cheapest two bed house, but it's terrible. Anything not dangerous would be 350k plus.

MinnieMountain · 12/03/2023 06:33

2 bed flats start at £100,000 in my city. Houses at £145,000.
Our 2 bed house cost £110,000 in 2006, so it’s been a gradual increase.
