Can I cancel flights and get my money back?

piddocktrumperiness · 11/03/2023 23:40

Just a hypothetical. If I booked tickets directly with the airline, and I later (weeks later) change my mind over the trip and want to cancel can I get my money back?
If so, how do I do this?

It will depend on the type of ticket & the terms & conditions.

Yep, depends on the specific Ts and Cs.

user143677435 · 11/03/2023 23:42

It depends entirely on the terms of the ticket. Some are fully refundable, some are part refundable, some are non- refundable but can be changed for a fee, some can’t be changed at all.

what they all said… but I would normally assume they aren’t flexible tickets unless you specifically book them to be.

CurlsLDN · 11/03/2023 23:47

If you book a ticket type that is refundable, log in to your online account, click on the flights and there is probably a button to cancel them

PacificallyRequested · 11/03/2023 23:55

Flexible/refundable tickets are usually much more expensive. Most budget airlines won't offer this option at all. You're best to be sure you want to fly before you actually book the ticket.

Taciturn · 11/03/2023 23:55

No matter the t&Cs you can apply for taxes and charges back. This is normally the bull of the ticket cost, but expect an admin fee to be applied.

Taciturn · 11/03/2023 23:55

The bulk, not the bull 🙄

whynotwhatknot · 12/03/2023 00:17

not afaik without a charge even changing my flights last month they charged me and idndt even cancel

Bunnyfuller · 12/03/2023 00:20

Ryanair: nope

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 12/03/2023 00:21

I think it really depends. The booking T&C. The time until your flights. Etc

I know that I could cancel my July BA flights now, and I’d get everything but my deposit back. My deposit was £250.

I’d be surprised if there were no losses, although that was the case during covid for many airlines.

Butterfly44 · 12/03/2023 00:59

If you pay for flexi tickets - being able to change flights etc. no if anything rude.

For tickets you would be able to exchange perhaps. Or exchange for a fee which is usually per passenger per flight and might be work than original.

Ponderingwindow · 12/03/2023 01:05

Occasionally, but it is rare that an average person booked that kind of ticket for personal use.

Polarbearyfairy · 12/03/2023 07:28

Entirely depends on the t&c of the airline, and they will all have their own policies. So, impossible to say you can or can't. I think generally you either pay more for the flexibility to change/cancel without fees (basically you pay the fee up front as part of the ticket price!) or you pay a fee for each change you make to a booking.

I usually book with easyJet, their T&C involves fees. I think to cancel you pay an admin fee, which might be more than the price of the tickets if they were really cheap.

MaverickSnoopy · 12/03/2023 07:42

I used to be a PA and booked A LOT of flights for someone very particular about types of tickets.

Check the type of ticket you have booked. Some are fully flexible and can be transfered or refunded. Others just transferable and others aren't refundable. In all instances you can always claim back the taxes and charges.

Beezknees · 12/03/2023 07:47

It really depends. If it's a budget airline, no chance but many let you pay extra for a flexible ticket so if you're unable to travel then you can change the date. A full refund is unlikely for most airlines though.

We booked flexible tickets with easy jet. Turned to be a lot less flexible than normal tickets despite costing over double

DustyLee123 · 12/03/2023 07:50

I’m not going on the flights I booked last year, moved the date once but still can’t go. This has been a very expensive mistake ! Can I claim something back ?
it’s Ryanair.

Have you got insurance?

saraclara · 12/03/2023 07:56

No-one can give you the answer to this. It depends entirely on the airline and the type of ticket you bought.
Either check your terms and conditions or if you don't understand them, call the airline and ask.

Did you take out insurance, and if so does the reason for cancelling come under it?

DustyLee123 · 12/03/2023 07:56

Don’t think DH got that as we aren’t going.

You buy insurance on the day you book your tickets if you want cancellation to be covered.

This is one of Martin Lewis's constant refrains.

DustyLee123 · 12/03/2023 08:00

We just can’t go now, I don’t think that would be covered under insurance !

RunTowardsTheLight · 12/03/2023 08:02

It depends on the ticket, but usually not.

Cookerhood · 12/03/2023 08:22

Is this two people with the same issue or a name change fail?
