Bought a pack of Ivy's Reserve cheddar today for first time. Opened it tonight and noticed on back of pack: "Once opened, consume within three days". Cheese usually lasts a couple of weeks in fridge surely??

I open mine, cut it into chunks on the day of purchase and freeze it. That way I never have issues.

You wouldn’t have any issues if you just kept it in the fridge. It keeps fine for ages.

You do know that cheese is essentially “mould” from milk. Just chop any dry bits off.

Ridiculousness like this from food manufacturers is why food waste is so bad

I don't think cheese IS "essentially 'mould' from milk".

Definitely good for business!

I opened a tub of humous that said eat within two days - I really don't think it'd be good for me to eat that much humous over two days so unless you're sharing, you're stuffed (well not actually, as it's still ok several days later)

You've just read a person explaining that they freeze their cheese, presumably to avoid waste.

I first noticed this warning on some brands of cheese years ago, I ignored it then and I still ignore it now. It's madness, does anyone actually comply?

Nope. It's just so when people complain that they opened it a week ago and left it unwrapped (and probably in the airing cupboard) and now it's gone all hard and / or mouldy they can say it says use within 3 days on the pack. Sorry, no refund.

User174387612 · 10/03/2023 21:14

I ignore the dates on hard cheese but not soft cheese, I have used cheddar a month out of date and it's been fine

Humous fine till it goes bubbly.

Glad it's not just me! Won't be buying that one again, wasn't cheap either, but looked nice! Back to Davidstow.....

No need to not buy this one again, it'll last the same as others and Ivy's reserve is delicious (it's my current favourite and I've never even noticed the 3 day thing so I've definitely eaten it after much longer!)

RobertsRadio · 10/03/2023 21:19

I sometimes take 3 or 4 weeks to finish a pack of cheddar, it's fine. If there is a ever a bit of mould I just cut it off, never suffered any ill effects. Same with bread, I just cut off the mould and use it for toast.

I usually put cheddar in a cheese dish so once it's in there I have no idea what the date is

Theimpossiblegirl · 10/03/2023 21:27

I wish cheese lasted more than a few days in this house...

midsomermurderess · 10/03/2023 21:34

Bloody hell. Cheese has been used, often as a fairly long-term, storage mechanism for milk for millennia.

Trouble is, it's only me who loves cheese in our house, so it needs to last at least a week.

Rubbish. Good for months. When white/blue bits appear, chip them off. The remainder is fine.

JennyDarlingRIP · 10/03/2023 23:09

Don't look at a jar of pesto OP, that's the same (who eats a whole jar of pesto in 3 days unless you have half a dozen DC), also pickles and jam with end dates. The whole point is they are preserves! I agree about humous though, that has a limit, and it goes fizzy

OnGoldenPond · 11/03/2023 00:55

Cheese making is a natural food preservation method. It should last for weeks stored in a cool place. This is just silly use by labelling aimed at pushing people to ditch the product before it is used up and buy more.

HighInfidelity · 11/03/2023 01:19

I think all cheese tells you on the packaging to eat it within 3 days or so but it doesn’t really matter as long as it looks ok. I’ve never had uneaten cheese long enough to test how long it actually lasts but I’m sure it’s more than 3 days.

My dad was visiting for a weekend and saw some jam in my fridge. He sighed and said he loved ham but he never bought any because it just goes off and he has to bin most of the jar. I told him that it doesn't and you just never ever use a dirty knife in it. The one he was holding was a good 4 months old. He was amazed.

I remember crying so hard when it came time to throw that empty jar almost a year later. Dad had passed away in that time and the jam had outlasted him. I felt so stupid breaking down over the last few scrapings of a jam jar.
