Can we talk badly about the dead?

Started from the celeb thread whether they are nice or not. Comment was Sarah in girls allowed wasn’t nice, something like stuck up and mardy.

A few comments saying you can’t say that as it’s bad taste.

what’s the general consensus can we talk badly if the dead? What if someone was a murderer can you then? Where the line? Or is it never ok?

Cilla Black always comes up in those 'horrid celeb' threads, she died 8 years ago. No one ever seems to feel bad about that though. Maybe it's because Sarah died fairly young though that people are more uncomfortable about it, I don't know.

Would I bad mouth a person who had died just for the sake of it? No, I wouldn't but I have nothing favourable to say about my grandfather, he was an evil man in life and that doesn't change just because he died.

Yoshithegreen · 10/03/2023 18:36

@Choconut that’s interesting, I do think your onto something. If a celeb was older and died are we more accepting to talk badly of them. The younger someone dies is it more unacceptable to talk bad of them?

Same, I have some family members who have practically become saints since passing.

I agree if someone behaved bad when alive I don't understand why we need to pretend they were nice.

There's a boy who died a few years ago near where I live, he was a little shite no denying it. Antisocial thief who generally make other peoples lives a misery.

When he died in car accident (uninsured no licence, no doubt driving badly) he was 'a bubbly lad full of character' !!!!!

I've never understood the don't speak bad of the dead line. He was no loss to this world.

a boy? as in a child? sounds like a sad situation rather than a bad person

That's very true. I think in all these threads nobody has ever had a good word to say about Cilla Black. But nobody ever calls that out. Seems a bit hypocritical tbh.
I also remember when Jade Goody was being pilloried on here then was suddenly elevated to near sainthood after her death. Likewise Peaches Geldof. One minute slagged off as a drug addict, next minute "a young mother taken in her prime".

x2boys · 10/03/2023 19:05

You only have to look at "St Diana" ,she certainly had her troubles, and the papers were not to kind about her before she died ,and yet after, her untimely, death she was elevated to sainthood by the media.

ShakespearesBlister · 10/03/2023 19:08

I suppose it depends if what you are saying is true?

SirChenjins · 10/03/2023 19:09

I was surprised by the reaction from a few posters about the OP in that thread - it was simply reporting her friend’s experience of an interaction with Sarah Harding. I don’t see why she singled out for criticism while other posters mentioned celebs who were dead and nothing was said.

I didn't know Cilla Black had died!

I hate that people say u can’t speak about the dead like that
i also don’t understand people who go to funerals when they not seen the person in years, why go, if u can’t be arsed to see them when alive , why go cos they died, two faced in my opinion
I didn’t go to my stepdads as hadn’t seen him in 10 years, no I’m not hard, just honest
