Jigsaws

I'm forever trying to find a hobby I enjoy (other than eating and watching TV!) I have plenty of time on my hands but waste so much of it just doing nothing very much at all, I'd really like to have some hobbies. I have booked into a Pilates class next week which is a start!

I've been thinking about jigsaws. My MIL loves doing them and will often have one laid out on the dining room table (which they don't really use otherwise). I don't really have this option, DH works from home using half the dining room table so doesn't really suit to have a jigsaw on the other half! What do people do who are into jigsaws? Also, do you just complete the jigsaw, then break it up and put it back in the box the re-do it? I suppose the obvious answer is 'yes', just wondering about the logistics of it as a hobby.

Currently we're re-doing the spare bedroom so have a sort of relaxing 'nook' with a comfy chair with footstool, for relaxing. It wouldn't have a great deal of space for a table though.

Any jigsaw lovers out there?

if you are fit and well, why not something active? And include yoga in active

MishaBukvic · 10/03/2023 14:20

Yes , we do the Wasjig ones where you don't have the picture on the box , but you get clues/ the picture from another perspective so it's a bit more challenging than a regular jigsaw. Normally set one up on the table in spare room, spend anywhere from half an hour to several hours at a time on it. When it's done, we photo it , dismantle it and take it to our local church jumble Sale and swap it for another.

Nothing beats in my view being outside

Rambling? Trail walking?

I've recently started doing jigsaws to get me off my phone.

Only 500 piece ones though, 1000 is a step too far for me!

I like ones from The Works and I have a jigsaw board I got from there as I like to sit infront of the TV to do them.

Sounds like you are also taking up active hobbies so will be something nice to do to relax!

@Lovelyveg82 I am fairly active in that I workout (with DVDs) for 30 / 40 minutes each morning before I start work and go for a 25/30 minute walk at lunchtime (both DH and I wfh). I did try yoga a while back but I was so wobbly during some poses it put me off. I did some on-line Pilates and like that much better hence next week's class. I do know yoga is good for you though so I will try it again.

@MishaBukvic I have never heard of Wasjig puzzles, definitely something to look into!

We do them. There's a lovely old thread somewhere about jigsaws, I'll see if I can find it. It always gets resurrected at Christmas.
I do 1000 ones. If they're stunningly beautiful I frame them, but most I break up and they go back in the box.

Why aren't you turning the spare room into DH's office? That sounds far more practical.

there are loads of different jigsaw boards, rolls, 'things' online.

I use an art portfolio type thing. It's huge. A1 maybe that folds in half. So puzzle on one half and th other half folds over the top of the puzzle and it has elastic on the corners to keep it closed & slide it under the settee.

I didn't like the roll one I tried, but many do, maybe it's a case of getting the right one?

it seems strange to me to just want hobbies for the sake of it. If your happy watching TV, or chatting on MN & there's nothing you especially want to do, why do you think you 'need' a hobby?

it's not like thinking you need to learn something or be better read.

I am also a wasgij addict Grin

I have one of the large jigsaw boards similar to the one in the photo. I can leave a half completed jigsaw in it and it slides under the sofa when not being used.

I have a big bit of thin wood which I do jigsaws on and when it is 'in progress' I just slide the bit of wood under the sofa and then get it out again when I want to carry on. Saves taking up the dining table!!

Wishimaywishimight · 16/03/2023 13:55

@WWinterMusings I did consider putting a desk in the spare room for DH but I think it would look a bit cluttered with the double bed and I don't want to get rid of that as my mum stays over from time to time. DH has a lot of work clutter, a double screen etc.

You make a good point as to why I feel the need to foist hobbies upon myself! One of the reasons tbh is that I turn 55 this year and read an article recently about how jigsaws / puzzles help keep the mind sharp as we age! I'm quite good with physical activity but apart from work I don't do anything to stretch my mind/brain.

@IaIamSmarticus I was looking at that sort of thing on Amazon looks ideal.
