Flights from London City Airport for nervous flyer

Is London City Airport worse than others for descent and ascent of aircraft?

Will my nervous of flying partner be more scared going out and coming in to City airport?

All the info states that the airport has a steeper 'glidepath' than others which I think means it will be at a more extreme angle but presumably this means a shorter descent?

We are looking around and in terms of timings City would be best for our flight rather than Gatwick which we normally use. He is usually fine but can get quite agitated and nervous of flying (bad experience as a child I think) especially coming in to land.

And do the planes feels significantly smaller than the usual 737s on European routes?

Any experiences welcomed!

I am massively phobic of flying. Once did a flight to and from London City. The take off was no worse than normal but the landing I hated! I think we were unlucky though as the stewardess said it was an awful landing! It was a smaller propellor plane too which I also hated! I’m sure other people have much better experiences, this is just mine as a very nervous flyer!

I only ever flew out of London City once, the plane was very small and the take off was really turbulent because of the weather.
My DS, 2 at the time, never stopped screaming, passengers tried to help but he never shut up, we didn't fly for years after that.

I am a nervous flyer and try to fly from city as much as I can. Landings can be sharp but the calmness of the airport ( basically smaller than Victoria station) and the smaller planes make me feel quite calm.

Take off is steep and landings are sharp but the airport experience is so good it’s worth it IMO. Not sure about for a nervous flyer though. Some planes are normal short haul size. Some are smaller. Depends on the route.

It is a steeper glide slope for LCY. I believe its a captain only landing too, due to the difficulty. If you're nervous, I'd avoid as it does feel different to other airports. Disclaimer: I'm not a pilot but my daughter is a pilot in training and she says that if you're that nervous, try somewhere else

I absolutely LOVE City Airport. If I could I'd only fly from there. Its so small and clean and easy. I haven't noticed any difference with the actual flights though so I'm not sure whether that's actually helpful 😅

I am a nervous flyer but love London City. It's small and calm. On take off it feels like they go quite fast compared to other airports (probably because it's a short runway). On landing I know the descent is steeper but I have never noticed. The pilots have extra training to fly from city so I always feel a bit safer.

I'm a nervous flyer but like City airport. And often less queues/stacking so less time in the air (although some of the small planes take longer).

I like the take-off at City. Last time the pilot seemed to put it on full thrust with the brakes on, released the brakes and we were airborne in 5 second or so (I counted). It doesn't feel a steeper climb than any other airport after the initial take-off.

PatriciaHolm · 10/03/2023 15:03

I love City too, so much smaller and calmer than the bigger airports usually. The only issue is if there are delays, then it gets busy very quickly as there really isn't much space if there are a couple more plane loads of people around!

Planes can be smaller than you might be used to - 2x2 rather than 3x3 seat layout, for example, for short hops. It is a sharp up and down, but the landing for example shouldn't be any harder/bumpier for that.

they have the new scanners for security which don't require liquids or laptops to be taken out of your bags which is nice too.

musicmum75 · 10/03/2023 15:04

City tends to be smaller propellor planes. I'm not a big fan of small planes as you feel every bump when you're in the air!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 10/03/2023 15:07

It’s a steep take off you feel like you’re going to crash into Canary Wharf and then the plane veers off

emmathedilemma · 10/03/2023 15:35

I love city airport, it's small and compact and departures feels more like a hotel lobby than an airport. But the planes tend to be smaller and if you're a nervous flyer you need to be aware that it's surrounded by water so can feel like you're coming into land on the Thames.

FWIW/Interests sake a promotional video here from the days when BA were operating LCY/JFK with all business class configured A318s

mediacentre.britishairways.com/videos/details/202

As someone mentioned upthread it's a slightly steeper than normal approach at 5.5 degrees from the horizontal verses the more typical 3 degrees, it's not a space shuttle style dive

LlynTegid · 10/03/2023 16:09

Not from my experience, just smaller than the others and I felt out of place by being casually dressed!

I took that flight a couple of times, it was amazing!
